Q: my apple cinema display fan has become louder

The fan inside my Apple Cinema Display 27" has gotten noisier over the past several months. Is there anything practical that I can do to correct this, without taking the monitor into an Apple Store?

Or perhaps it's the speakers, now that I listen again. When I turn the monitor on, there's an audible pop sound, like a speaker firing up. Though I can't be sure.

I too have this problem and I too think it is the fan cooling the screen that is making the noise because when I increase the brightness on the cinema display the noise gets louder and more intense. It sounds like the fan blades are going against something. When I plug the mag safe into my MBP things get really out of hand and the noise gets really loud and irritating. Does that happen in your case aswell?

Does anyone have any thoughts on how to make sure what is the problem and how to fix it?

    Thank you.

Interesting, that it seems to get louder when you plug in the power chord. That makes it seem more like a speaker problem than a fan problem. (It's not uncommon at all for speakers to buzz when some extra power is put in the wrong place. For example, in my car, my smartphone sounds great through the aux port--but then if I plug the phone into a power source, my car speakers will buzz).

This might also explain why the sound gets louder when you increase the brightness on yours--when you crank up the brightness, you're sucking more power. Everyone is familiar with the fact that their laptop batteries die faster when they increase the screen brightness. And more power means more speaker buzz.

That said, I still have no idea how to fix it. But now I'm starting to bet that the noise has something to do with the monitor's speakers and the power. Maybe there's a badly coated wire, somewhere. Or some crossed wires.

I'm not at home yet, but when I get back, I'll try turning my brightness up and down, and seeing if it has an effect. I'll try the magsafe thing too.

Alright so I've come home and tested the problem again. The noise I'm hearing is definitely not the fan.

I figured this out in a funny way. I grabbed one of my cat's feather toys and held it under the vents at the bottom of the monitor. The feathers moved in the air from the monitor's fan. By doing this, I discovered that the fan doesn't run constantly. In fact, I could make the fan shut off completely by putting the display to sleep.

When I did this, the feathers stopped moving, but the noise continued. (Which makes perfect sense--the speakers need to continue working even in the display is asleep--many people listen to music on their computers until the display shuts off. The music needs to keep going.)

I'm completely convinced now that the sound I'm hearing is coming from the speakers inside the monitor. I should have known it from the beginning. That tiny 'pop' sound that comes on when I fire up sure sounds like a speaker.

My monitor is actually under warranty still, but I've had some difficulties in getting the Apple Geniuses to replicate problems I've experienced in the past. I'm not at all sure that they will notice the noise I'm hearing, especially in a noisy Apple store. But I suppose I have no choice now but to haul the monitor in and try.

    Hello again!

Thats interesting. Maybe I am being fooled by the screen. It is laying out a smoke "screen".

I thought it was the fan making the sound but maybe the case is that the fans "intensity" somehow affects the speakers and amplifies the fan noise. (??) Could that happen? Or maybe it is not the fan at all and the electronics are affecting the speakers like you are saying. Intresting indeed.

Today I put my ear to the vent on the back of the screen (behind the stand) to listnen to the noise and it came out very loud, even louder than under the screen.  So I thought, well it has to be the fan then because that is where it is located. But as I read your post here it struck me that it is also where the subwoofer is located. And thus it led me to belive in your theory that it is the speakers I am hearing.

So now I am wondering what could cause this and how to fix it. I will go to the mac service store nearby this afternoon and hear what they have to say. I will report back!

    Stay tuned.

PS. Here is a picture of the internals of the apple cinema led display 27" that i found on google. It helped me get a grip of how it is constructed and where everything sits.

Ok, the visit to apple service center helped me not very much as anticipated. Of course they wanted me to carry the display to the store so they could fix it and that would probably cost me around 2000 swedish kronor (about 300USD) so that is out of the question.

    BUT!!

I have stumpled upon a very intruiging thread where a guy has uploaded a video of the noise his display is making and it is identical to the noise I am hearing from my display! I was very happy to find this. The solution though seems a bit complicated to me as a novice in electronics but it involves swapping some parts on the power supply board in the display and I am tempted to give it a try.

Definitely interesting. And I would probably do it, if my monitor wasn't under warranty. I guess I'll be leaving it up to the Apple techs.

Even though I'm pretty sure that my problem is the speakers, its possible that yours is the fan. Who really knows, without opening it up and looking? There are several things inside of there that can make noise. Hopefully you get it solved without spending too much money.

Thanks for the image and link.

    What a pain, huh?

Yeah! I know. I will get prepared and open the screen up shortly. I will photograph the procedure and post my findings here. Exciting!

    Hello again!

It has taken me some time to get around to it but now I have replaced the green taicon-capacitors and put the screen back together. It has been running for a few hours now and so far everything is perfect! I am hoping it stays that way. So, bottomline, it seems it solves the problem to replace the capacitors. Very happy for this! Hope it helps you.
