To confirm this is related to the iPod, what happens if you launch iTunes by itself, from the Dock or Applications folder (with iPod not connected)?  Does it start up properly, or does it still quit unexpectedly?

If it starts up properly, what happens if you connect the iPod AFTER iTunes is already running?

You said, in a separate topic you created that is directly related to this topic:

"I-tunes still crashes when I connect the ipod, even when itunes is running first."

So, that also means iTunes does not crash when launched by itself, correct?

There may be a problem with the USB connection.  As a test, shut down (power off) the Mac and disconnect all USB devices, including any USB hub.  You can leave standard USB keyboard and mouse connected, if used.  If the Mac is laptop, connect its power adapter (so that it's not running on battery power).  Do this to reset the shuffle

Start up the Mac, run iTunes, and connect shuffle to a direct USB port on the computer.  Does the problem recur?

Connect something else to the direct USB port on the Mac that you used with the shuffle, to confirm the USB port is working properly.  Preferably, use something for this test that is similar to the shuffle, such as a USB flash drive or external drive.

Does the shuffle still work properly (to play music) when it is disconnected?

After iTunes quits unexpectedly when connecting the shuffle to USB, what is happening with the shuffle's light?  Is it ON?  Is it flashing?

After iTunes quits, leave the shuffle connected and run Disk Utility.  Does the shuffle's storage disk appear in the Disk Utility sidebar?  If you run System Profiler, is the shuffle identified properly as a USB device?

    Shuffle works properly when disconnected.

After i-tunes quits, ipod says synching and then connected, light is on but not flashing on and off

Shuffle's storage disk appears in Disk utility and system profiler shows it as a usb device. Problem persists.

One thing I forgot to mention is that this took place when I was downoading a book from my public library. I have done this before many times without problems, but maybe there is something different in the library that is causing this.

After i-tunes quits, ipod says synching and then connected...

Your iPod is a shuffle?  A shuffle has no screen, so if iTunes is not running because it unexpectedly quit, where are you seeing the iPod say "syncing" and "connected."  Is it a nano?

If it's a nano (or an iPod with a screen), you can disregard the question about the LED "light." What appears on the screen is good (plus the Disk Utility and System Profiler results), because your iPod appears to be recognized properly by the computer.  But there may be some data corruption on the iPod's storage that is causing iTunes to crash when it tries to do the initial sync.

If you don't have a problem with erasing what is currently on the iPod (because everything is in your iTunes library you can just resync it), you can try  the following.  Put the iPod into Disk Mode

    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1363

(This assumes your iPod is not a shuffle, because there is no Disk Mode for a shuffle.)

If you can put the iPod into Disk Mode, connect it to the Mac.  I don't think iTunes will start up automatically.  Then run iTunes.  If iTunes says something about "recovery" and prompts you to do a Restore, do the Restore.  This will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings.  If the cause is data corruption and is not hardware-related, the problem may be resolved.
