Q: Solution for Aperture 3.5 and OSX 10.9 Maverick's crashing

Installed Mavericks and Aperture 3.5

since the installation only issues I am having are with Aperture.

Aperture crashes fairly often, couple times an hour while veiwing, rating or adjusting pictures.  Does not seem to happen if looking at projects or looking at photos in the large grid view.

Occurs in multiple libraries.

Actions I have taken that have not solved it!:

Repaired Disk

Repaird disk permissions

repaired Library permissions

repaired library

rebuilt library

trashed plist

deleted and reinstalled aperture.

Opened all libraries in Iphoto latest version.  No crashes.

HELP!

When I look back at crash you posted, I amseeing lines like above in the part with the "crashed thread".  This seemd to suggest, that the problem occurs, when Aperture is reading the SQL databases in your Aperture library.

Do you repair your library after crashes occur? Crashing and force-quitting may leave the library in an inconistent condition. And that will add to the problems caused by your suspected hardware problems.

Excellent points and observations.  I would agree 100% with your statement.  It seems others have similar issues when it's writing.  After every crash / hang I repair system drive and data drive and repair permissions, using disk utility. Then I repair the aperture data base that was open when it crashed / hung using the aperture repair tool.

3 crashes today in Aperture.  This did not happen before 3.5 and Maverick's.  It does not happen in other programs.

I could use some advice on a site to help me read these things....

That is not a simple crash, it is a kernel panic,  see:

    OS X: About kernel panics

Panics are frequently caused by hardware problems or by having installed incompatible kernel extensions.

I have no idea how to troubleshoot hardware problems, but the call stack is showing your graphics card in the backtrace. There may be a problem with the graphics card.

The only third party software I could find in your panic report are these:

    oaded kexts:

    com.attotech.driver.ATTOiSCSI          3.4.1b1

    com.TrustedData.driver.VendorSpecificType00          1.7.0

This looks like a graphics problem for me. This thread is discussing a very similar panic report:

    Leonie,

Thank you for all your help.  I really want to understand the logic that my system was fine before Maverick's and Aperture 3.5 updated same day.  Following the update the system is having Kernal panics, crashes and hangs only in Aperture and this is a hardware issue, even after the troubleshooting routine has run for days with out issue.

This makes no sense to me.

You may want to ask about the kernal panics in the Mavericks forum. There you will find our system experts, Rick.

Following the update the system is having Kernal panics, crashes and hangs only in Aperture and this is a hardware issue, even after the troubleshooting routine has run for days with out issue.

This makes no sense to me.

    I suggested two possible reasons:

    • Incompatible kernel extensions: A system upgrade will or can make older extensions installed by third party applications incompatible and they may be causing panics in other applications like Aperture.
    • Your graphics card: Aperture is a very challanging multimedia application and uses advanced features of the graphics card to speed up processing, that not many applications are using. So might notice problems with the GPU only in Aperure.

I am not sure at all about the reason for your crashes - I only pointed out the suspicious items in your panic report.

If you have other graphics applications installed, that would use your graphics card intensively, let them run, e.g. final cut or iMovie.

Yes, the last entry is "Thunderbolt Bus:"

Aperture hangs after starting it about 30 seconds later.

    all great input.

I can use Final Cut for hours without error.  Would'nt this be considered a challenging multimdeia application that uses advaced feature of the graphics card to speed up processing?

My computer does not have a thunderbolt bus.

Is there a way to start the system with out all the extensions loading?  Thus taking out that part of the equation?  Something like Safe Mode on a PC

You can start your mac in Safe Mode - that will disable all non-standard kernel extensions, startup items, non-standard preference panes, and disable the advanced features of the graphics cards. Really great for testing, see: Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode

Previuos versions of Aperture would not launch at all in Safe Mode, however, because they need the advanced features of the graphics card. Since Mavericks, I could get get Aperture to launch in this mode, but it will be painfully slow. But ty it, booting into Safe Mode will reset some graphics related parameters on the card, perhaps this will help.

This must be a software problem because I'm getting it on my brand new 27 inch iMac with Aperture, having to repair the database pulling the plug and rebooting. Mavericks and Aperture 3.5.1.
My Aperture Library is on an attached harddisk which is my norm. Will try one of the iMac's drive and see how I get on.

I set up a Macdrive library, imported a huge project into and flew through the images at top speed. Wouldn't have lasted a second on the previous setup. No crash.

The problem is a software one caused by some kind of bottleneck caused by a slower external drive in my opinion. The fact that both I and at least one other had similar results suggests that.

The fact that iPhoto didn't cause it suggests it's software..

    Gearoidmuar,

I assume you have a Thnderbolt external drive?  I find it much more unstable on my external FW 800 drive but I have had it fail on my internal Macdrive also but it is fairly rare on that drive.

No. Not at all. I've four USB2 Drives, not all plugged in at the same time.

I've used it extensively for viewing since, and though it runs much better, I hate to say that it has hung the computer twice during that period.

I've always found Aperture to be flaky but you seldom had to reboot, as you could stop the programme. On each occasion in Mavericks you have to pull out the plug.

Apple certainly know about this, but whether they'll do anything about it is another matter!

This is not a solution, but it is at the same time!

Don't press the next key when you are viewing files, and keep it pressed. This is what was hanging mine. I stopped doing that. I either press repeatedly or go to thumbnail mode and find what I want.
