Q: Sleep/wake crash OSX Mavericks, Macbook Air 2013

Hi there,

Since the upgrade to Mavericks my 2013 Macbook Air had a few sleep wake crashes. The problem occurs when my air turns to sleep, and I try to wake it with the keyboard within a very short time.(1-3 seconds I think) Happened a few times when I was typing and accidently pressed the on/off button while typing(which is a really stupid feature in the new OSX if you ask me) and a few times when I tried to safe my laptop from going to sleep because it was idle for to long, and just got there to late. What happens is that the Macbook just gives a black screen, but is still on. I cant let it sleep by closing the lid, and the only way to get it running again is by restarting.(holding down the on/off button)

Couldnt find anything similar to this. So i'm hoping if this is a common problem with Mavericks and is on the list to be fixed with the new patch.

I hope you guys have some info.

Same issue with a late 2013 MacBook Pro. I've been tracking the various threads on this issue while trying to issolate the cause on my machine. Because the Sleep/Wake problem seems to have many guises this may or may not be of any help.

    • First the Power Nap settings did nothing.
    • I then left my two external USB Hard Drives disconnected and the problem went completely away (3 days).
    • I recconnected the one drive that I use for TIme Machine and still no problemo (2 days)
    • I recconnected the second drive that is partitioned and using Carbon Copy Cloner and the Sleep/Wake crash was immediately back.
    • I dissconnected the partitioned drive and no problem (4 days now).

So in my case it's being triggered by something on or with this external partitioned drive:

    My Book 1130:

      Product ID:          0x1130

Vendor ID:          0x1058  (Western Digital Technologies, Inc.)

      Version:          10.12

      Serial Number:          574341575A30353730343430

      Speed:          Up to 5 Gb/sec

      Manufacturer:          Western Digital

      Location ID:          0x15220000 / 23

      Current Available (mA):          900

      Current Required (mA):          2

      Capacity:          3 TB (3,000,558,944,256 bytes)

      Removable Media:          Yes

      Detachable Drive:          Yes

      BSD Name:          disk3

Partition Map Type:          GPT (GUID Partition Table)

      S.M.A.R.T. status:          Not Supported

I'm now going to reformat this drive and see if that resolve the issue. I'll post the results in a few days.

I just erased my HD and reverted to a fresh install of Mountain Lion. The problem persists.

I have the same sleep problem with my late 2013 Macbook Air. It's not the only problem I have, but it's the worst one. I also can't connect to a known wifi network within 45 seconds of resuming from sleep (unless i turn wifi off and back on), and occasionally crash when resuming from sleep even if it has been sleeping for a while. But I can reproduce the crash with the steps described above of swiping the trackpad immediately after the screen goes dark.

I talked to a genius at the Apple Store yesterday- he told me Apple was aware of this issue, it is not a hardware issue, and they're working on it. Less inspiringly, he said to come back in six months if it was still a problem.

Anyway, sorry to say that I'm glad to see many other people have having the same problem - hopefully that means Apple is working on it!

Happens on MBA(2013) with Windows 8.1  as well as Maverick. I suspect a hardware or firmware error. Only happens when I don't pay attention. Hibernate and sleep is off. It happens always while I'm asleep and also when I don't use the Macbook for a while (over an hour at least).

A hard reboot (pressing power for 10sec + press power) solves the problem till it happens again.

After trying all of the various solutions from resetting the SMC to erasing the SSD and re-installing Mavericks, Apple support concluded that, whilst the issue may be discussed in a forum, this represented a very small number compared to the number of units sold and that this was a Hardware issue.

Apple therefore replaced my brand new Macbook Pro R. I was happy though sceptical at the time and of course the new one has exactly the same issue!

Support were not interested in the Power Management Log that seems to illustrate some issues at the exact time of attempting to wake.

    E.g.

    09/12/2013 09:06:48 GMT  Wake                    Wake [<off> ] due to 0x21006C00: Using BATT (Charge:93%)

I found that removing the 'SnoozeMaster' App seemed to reduced the incidence. At first completely and I thought that this was indeed the problem however it has started to occur again.

Glad to hear that Apple now consider it to be an OSX problem.

Same here on both MBPs from 2010 and ’11 … Random restarts seem to increase. Nearly unable to work. 8 restarts for today … Apple are you sleeping? So many threads about this issue …

I have the same issue. Have been happening to me in the recent three days. I have no idea what is wrong - I did all the tricks like reseting SMC, reparing disk permissions. I assume it was a Mavericks issue since it never happened to me before (2009 Unibody MBP). The weird thing is it only happend to me recently, and I have upgrade to Mavericks for a while.

I've been able to successfuly replicate the issue on 10.9.1 as of Monday, Dec. 16th.

Please fix this soon. It's incredibly irritating because of how often it occurs. As a student I often have something up on the display and I'll be working off of it. Then the display goes dead and I react by immediately trying to wake it... Which results in me losing all the work I have up. Pretty awful bug.

FWIW, I'm not seeing this problem in a 1-month-old Air running ML (10.8.5).

NLSielicki, after reading this thread it would seem that if you have a laptop then either changing your Energy Saver Battery "display off" setting to "Never" or keeping your system on A/C power while studying would help temporarily.  Then again I may be missing something.

Still can't figure it out why this bug occurs mostly on MBA, as I read this thread, users with other macs are in minority. Is this bug linked with MBA somehow, what do you think?
