Dec 4, 2013 7:35 AM in response to michael0747by Michael Black,I don't understand - you cannot make a phone call to an email address, that's impossible to do. Nor can a data only device like an iPad receive a phone call.
An iPad can use a VOIP service, like Skype, but even then, you would call her Skype telephone number to make a call to her.

Do you mean iMessage texts??

Dec 4, 2013 7:45 AM in response to michael0747by Michael Black,Is she connected to a wifi network at the time?
Check if anything in the Facetime trouble shooting guide helps:

Dec 4, 2013 8:01 AM in response to Michael Blackby michael0747,Thanks Michael. She was connected to wifi then. The link referes to certain countries not being available, but she is in Australia and I think that's ok. Also something about push functionality but not sure how to check this. However the real issue is that the iphone does not seem to let you choose which to use. I guess I could just delete her phone details and check it out then, next time she is with wifi!

Dec 4, 2013 8:06 AM in response to michael0747by pdroth,★HelpfulI've had this problem too - my workaround was to make 2 contacts. 1 has the phone #, the other has the email address.

Dec 4, 2013 8:07 AM in response to michael0747by Michael Black,The countries that ban facetime are all middle eastern nations as far as I know, so that should not be an issue.
Push is necessary because if her device is in sleep mode and unplugged, it needs to use push to alert her of a facetime call.
I suppose it is possible that the wifi network she is on in Australia is actively blocking facetime - no way for you to actually check if it is a firewall/router setting but she may be able to ask someone.

Dec 4, 2013 8:14 AM in response to Michael Blackby michael0747,Yes could be. it happened both ways though - she to me first but maybe she did something wrong. She may get a chance to check her machinewith Apple in Brisbane. But if not I'll split the contacts like pdroth suggests.

Then why was the OP able to make the facetime calls before, with both items in a single contact then (if I am reading his posts correctly)? I know I do not have to separate my contacts like that, and I do facetime with a couple of relatives with wifi only iPads (usually from my own iPad 4 or MBP, but I've done it once or twice from my iPhone 5 - all of which use the exact same contact entries).
Is this a quirk specific to an iPhone 4?
