Dec 2, 2013 6:35 AM in response to S. Sinclairby sl7z,Here is the solution. Now when you have photo attachments, press the "Forward/Reply" arrow icon on the bottom, and one option will be "Save Image". Select this and it will save to your Photos.

Dec 4, 2013 11:21 AM in response to S. Sinclairby denward,What i have noticed is that i can open photo email attachments if they don't exeed 800kb. Anything over that i get a greyed out icon of the photo attachment, which won't download.
Tried it on 3 seperate Iphones with IOS7. Same result on each.
Looks like an email size limit problem. Needs to be fixed fast APPLE.
Not tried downloading a PDF yet.

Dec 4, 2013 12:05 PM in response to S. Sinclairby leftcoaster,Just sent myself a 130kb photo from my laptop. Have tried all the techniques here and I still get the "Can't download attachment" error message. This is annoying; haven't encountered this before.

Dec 28, 2013 9:44 AM in response to S. Sinclairby DaveinOttawa,I have just upgraded my iPhone 3GS to an iPhone5S and experienced exactly the same problem with my photo attachments in Gmail - Tap to Download; but could not download. So I did some further tests including all the suggested fixes about turning on & off Load Remote Images in Mail settings - none of those things worked for me. But when I changed the file extension on my photo attachments from ".jpg" to ".JPG" the photos downloaded immediately with the email message. I've tried this several times including with photos over 6Mb in size and have no problems now. So from now on any photo attacments that I create and want to view on my IOS7 device(s) will use the upper case file extension. I hope this helps.

Dec 28, 2013 11:27 AM in response to DaveinOttawaby John H. Moore,Thank you DaveinOttawa!!!
Was going completely nuts trying to figure out how to get photos in Mail to show up on my wife's iPhone (I refuse to update my phone to iOS7). Renaming the file to JPG instead of jpg (uppercase versus lowercase) solved the issue. Well, solved getting that photo onto my wife's phone... clearly didn't solve the complete incompetence issue at the root of this. Wow. That is stunning.
So there's your solution (for now), folks.

Dec 28, 2013 1:18 PM in response to John H. Mooreby DaveinOttawa,Hi John. I'm glad that helped in your case with a photo for your wife. However, it has still been bothering me that the photos have been downloaded somewhere on the phone regardless of whether or not the file extension is upper or lower case.
Although I still don't know exactly where the photos are being (temporarily) stored on the IOS device, I have found a way to save & open them. Instead of hitting "Tap to Download", press the arrow icon at the bottom of the screen - the one for "Reply, Forward, Save Image(s) or Print". Select "Save Image(s)" and then go to the Photo folder and you will find the photos at the end of the Camera Roll. There you can view them, keep them or delete them. Seems to make no difference how the file extension is typed.
I hope that solves the problem for everyone who has experienced this problem on IOS7.

Dec 29, 2013 4:37 PM in response to DaveinOttawaby S. Sinclair,Excellent, but the problem is that the security software that sends me these images can't be modified to change the file extension to uppercase JPG.
What a pain.

Mar 15, 2014 6:28 PM in response to S. Sinclairby S. Sinclair,UPDATE: Looks like they silently fixed this bug in iOS 7.1 I'm happy that it's fixed, but disapointed that it took so long.
Anyway, at least it's done. Thanks to all.
