Oct 30, 2013 5:39 PM in response to Carlos Burgesby dbh-TalkingNewMedia,Apple tonight has issued an update to iBA which appears to solve the custom font embed issue. I can say that, assuming it looks as good as it appears, it will be much appreciated.

Oct 30, 2013 10:01 PM in response to dbh-TalkingNewMediaby vinnyvg,Perhaps todays iBA update 2.1.1 " resolves custom fonts display...." will help clear up the recent issues....

Nothing solved here. Anyone?
All my tests indicate 2.1.1 solves the font embedding problem. Please provide details of what is not working for you.

Dec 4, 2013 10:37 PM in response to Tom Geweckeby PatrickDodson,Still can't embed fonts in 2.1.1. Tried replacing my ttf URW Baskerville fonts for the regular Baskerville and italic versions. IBA will warn me if I use a postscript or unsupported font, but doesn't do so with these and a few others I tried. After exporting the file, I have the same problem. Looks fine in iBooks on my Mac but not if I turn the font off in Fontbook, and the iPad replaces the face with something generic.
Also, I have to access the Font Pane (Command T) as I don't see any fonts under Format > Font. Is that normal? Actually, they show up in the Format Bar but not in the menu.

Dec 5, 2013 5:08 AM in response to PatrickDodsonby Tom Gewecke,Since both iOS and OS X have Baskerville installed by default, I would not expect iBA to embed this one. But of course it should display on both as well...

Dec 5, 2013 11:49 AM in response to Tom Geweckeby PatrickDodson,Yeah, it defaults to a sans serif typeface. The file was created in 2.1.1 as well so there's no legacy issues. Seems like whatever typeface I use, it gets replaced with a sans serif.

Is this a totally new file, starting fresh from a template?
Perhaps you should try totally deleting your iBA app and downloading a new copy.

Dec 5, 2013 12:46 PM in response to Tom Geweckeby PatrickDodson,Deleted the app and the preferences
installed new app from iStore
started a new template
used two truetype fonts chosen from the format bar
exported to ibooks
turned the fonts off
ibooks showed them both as helvetica, and not even an italic version like the original baskerville

Were those fonts ones which are not included in iOS or OS X?

Dec 5, 2013 12:55 PM in response to PatrickDodsonby dbh-TalkingNewMedia,This sounds like the problems seen in 2.1 but not 2.1.1 - I have to assume that you are using the right version of the app but you should check under "About IBooks Author" just in case.
I used a rather strange font called Old Newspaper that I was concerned with, but it worked just fine once I had updated to 2.1.1. Is your version of Baskerville the only custom font that won't embed properly? Have you tried other fonts that would clearly be custom and not found on an iPad?

Dec 5, 2013 1:19 PM in response to Tom Geweckeby PatrickDodson,URW Baskerville Truetype
and URW Grotesk
also tried regular baskerville and it still converted to Helvetica

Dec 5, 2013 1:22 PM in response to dbh-TalkingNewMediaby PatrickDodson,Yes, I've tried a few others. IBA will warn me if the font is not going to work. Upon exporting, still comes up as helvetica

Dec 10, 2013 7:11 PM in response to PatrickDodsonby PatrickDodson,I've switched the fonts from URW true type to the built in Baskerville and Arial. Bummer but that's the only way I could get anywhere near what the book is supposed to look like. Maybe it just doesn't like URW TT fonts.
