My video is suddenly really slow before flashing a bright green screen.

I started editing on my Macbook Pro with my FCPX free trial, then went back to edit the same project on a school computer. I've done this countless times before with no issue, but the program is suddenly running really slowly. If I try to play, the footage will start fine, but after 2 or 3 seconds it will start lagging until the video goes away entirely and is replaced by a bright green screen. Moving clips around also causes the turning wheel to appear for at least 20 seconds before I can finally continue editing, but even then I can only do that one move before the turning wheel comes back. The footage is only 3.5 minutes long, and I'm not trying to do anything I haven't done before.

What could be causing these issues, and how do I fix them?

Final Cut Pro X, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4)
