There are a lot of things happening to your Mac immediately after it restarts from a major OSWX update. I it is indexing your entire boot drive and also starting a time machine update. This slows the computer a lot. A lot of people found relief by letting these processes run over night. Restarts, reparing disk permissions and starting in safe mode have also helped.

It has actually had a couple of days/nights to "settle in". Have restarted and repaired disk permissions already but will try them again this evening.

Enough free storage space?
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.Hang X with Mavericks!

Yes, have over 15% (90GB) capacity. I've been a Mac user since almost day 1 - well over 25 years - and have never had a DOS or Windows-based machine. This has felt like the slowest impact I've experienced from a release.

I am having the SAME PROBLEM! How can I speed my machine up? I am ready to sell its so bad!
Just wipe and sell.

How long ago did you install OS X Mavericks?
Currently Being ModeratedDec 5, 2013 8:51 PM (in response to MichelPM)
Installed it third week in Oct.

Please, start your own individual thread/post.
You are hijacking another user's posting and things are starting to get confused.
I replied to you, but the original user/poster thought I was replying to them.

Please download, install and run Etrecheck.
Etrecheck is a small, unobstrusive app that compiles a snapshot of your entire Mac hardware and installed software.
Copy/paste and post its report here in another reply thread so that we have a complete profile of your Mac's hardware and installed software, so we all can have a clearer understanding of your Mac's performance issues.

Here is the Etrecheck report. There were a couple of obvious things I cleaned up first but would appreciate any other comments/suggestions.

I have the same problem. I upgraded to Mavericks the first day it was available, weeks ago. Surely it can't still be indexing the files and updating Time Machine after several weeks. Even opening a Word or InDesign file is significantly slower. I'm ready to reinstall Mountain Lion and go back to having speed.

I'm experiencing the same issues, usually when I wake my Macbook Pro up in the morning. I recently had my logicboard replaced, my model is prone to video card problems and failed the hardware test at the Genius Bar. I read in another thread that it could be helpful to force quite Safari Web Content and QTKitServer instances in Activity Monitor, but I shouldn't have to do this to keep my computer from becoming unresponsive or beachballing like crazy. I have 8 GB of RAM, so that shouldn't be an issue.

I recently noticed that I had previously installed and forgot about Macports, there was another user named macports running in Activity Monitor. I followed the uninstallation instructions here:
Since the uninstall and a restart, I've noticed less beach balling and less of a lag.
