Q: OS X Lion Server Open Directory missing from Server app

For over a year this has been working flawlessly.  I took the hardware down for cleaning, and now when I try to log into a workstation using a network account, it says network accounts are unavailable.

On the server, when I launch the Server app, from the Services list, Directory Services is missing.  If I try to authenticate to the Open Directory services, it does not let me.

How can I get it working again?  How can I troubleshoot the daemon?

That's because Open Directory is found in Server Admin.app and not Server.app. You can get it through Server Admin Tools…

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1596?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

PS The link is for 10.7.5. If you are using an earlier Lion version you will need the Server Admin Tools appropriate for that version.

Thanks!  So now I see Open Directory, but it seems like it should be listed under the Server app with all the other services...

Anyhow, I seem to remember a way to administer the users and groups.  This app shows me the status of the services, logs, settings.  The Server app, if I click on Add Users button, then click "connect to it" to supposedly connect to the directory server, it won't take my credentials.  I always get "Cannot authenticate to server.  Please authenticate by entering the name and password of a user account in this server's directory."

Connect anonymously doesn't seem to do anything, it doesn't even dismiss the dialog.

    So what am I missing?

I'm not asking this to be rude or anything but have you managed/setup an OS X Server before? What you ask makes me think that you haven't and finding someone/something to give you a crash course on doing so may well be more worth your time.

This might be of use to you…

Not at all, I really appreciate the pointers. Its a very part time job (family network), so yes this is the first OS X server I have administered. It's pretty intuitive but those docs will help.
