If you "control" the iPad minis, you can download the apps to those devices. I believe that you would need to sign in with your Apple ID on the minis.

You could do the same thing for purchases. I would sign out on the minis to prevent accidental purchases charged to your account.

You can use your existing AppleID in the iTunes and App store for everyone.  But, they can get their own separate AppleIDs (using a free gmail, hotmail, AOL, etc email account) for use with iCloud and iMessage so their iCloud email, messages as well as backups and sync'd content (contacts, notes, etc) is all in separate and individual accounts.

    Hi Michael,

If I share the apps with the girls, then are they able to play them separately?  Hmmm, hard to explain....I've heard that if you share apps, multiple users cannot play against each other or at the same time.  I'm not sure if this is true or not.

If I share the apps with them, then delete them off my iPad, do they still have the apps?

Also, I just thought of this....what about the Game Center?  Is that accessible through their ID or mine?

I guess I'm just trying to let them keep what they already have (since they've racked up a billion points in their games and it would be a shame to make them start all over again) and let them be little individuals, yet with mom being able to control what they download.

    I'm so iOS dysfunctional  :-)

Thank you for any advice you can give and thank you for what you have already given  :-)

    Kim

Apple uses AppleIDs for all its services.  You can have as many AppleIDs as you wish, and you could, if you wished, use a different one for every different Apple service - iTunes & App stores, iCloud, iMessage, Game Center, these forums, etc.

So, yes, you can use your AppleID to download and install apps on their devices.  Those installations will only be deleted on those devices if someone deletes them - deleting them on one device does nothing to their installation on any other device.

Playing online games is dependent on the AppleID used to login to game center - it need not be the same AppleID used to purchase the game itself.

So if they each have their own AppleID they can use that for Game Center, iCLoud and iMessage (and FaceTime) but you use only your AppleID (and password) to actually purchase and install all content.

Now, if they have been using your iPad all this time and your AppleID in Game Center, then the only way to keep their progress will be to continue to use your AppleID in Game Center on your device - moveover you may have to restore their devices form a backup of your iPad in order to transfer all current progress over.  That will then make things problematic if they wish to play against eachother.

Honestly, I would tell them they will have to accept the fact that getting their own devices will mean they must start over with their games and move those games onto their own AppleIDs for now and ever more.  I simply know of no way to migrate them to their own devices and still keep all of the progress/points accumulated under your AppleID on your iPad - not and let them actually be their own little individuals with their own devices going forward.

P.S. another thing you should look at is the settings under "Restrictions" and see if you wish to enable any of those on their devices - things like age appropriate content filters or disable any changes to accounts and so forth.  You can set up restrictions on their devices, and keep the restrictions passcode to yourself so they cannot alter those settings.

Thank you Michael.  Your information has been excellent.  I didn't think I would be able to carry their games over knowing that my ID was the purchaser.  I might try the backup you suggested but if it doesn't work then oh well, I guess we can't have it all.  The sharing/deleting of apps was also a question that plagued me....and yes, I will definitely be checking out the restrictions....try to keep them innocent for as long as I can!  Thank you, Michael.  Your knowledge of these devices has really put my mind at ease on what to do and the proper steps to take.  I can't wait to get these minis all set up before "Santa" puts them under the Christmas tree.  Thank you again....and all the best to you in the New Year!
