I have tried all the suggestions in this thread (yes, including Chris CA's); nothing works except the option to delete apps and then re-download them.

Where are you seeing an option to delete & redownload?

    I changed ny ID because my old email address was due to be withdrawn; I had no choice. Everything else works with my new ID;

You changed your old AppleID to a new email address or you created a new AppleID?

Thanks for your quick response, Chris. Deleting and re-downloading was suggested in some earlier posts here.

I definately changed my old ID to a new one. My password remained the same. If I had created a new one I could understand the consequences perfectly. (Yesterday, after posting my message, I did create the old ID again to see if that would help, but of course it then needed all my credit card details again before I could use the app store, so I gave up at that point.

A repeat of my post from 2 years ago. This thread has no solution. Nor does Apple.

None of these "solutions" address the problem and none of them fix them problem. The only reason I have 2 apple IDs is poor planning by Apple. Mobile Me users were ASSIGNED an Apple ID ending in me.com, despite the fact that I already had an Apple ID. Now the me.com ID has followed me to iCloud and I can't get rid of it. When I set up iCloud I attepted to use my original Apple ID but was disallowed due to it "already being in use"...by me of course, but no matter. Now I am stuck with 2 IDs. Apple has confirmed this. Constant sync issues, icloud issues, purchase issues accross all devices. This was designed to simplify my life?

I didn't create a second Apple ID. Apple did that. I don't want 2 Apple IDs. Tough **** says Apple.

    There is no fix.

Chris CA. Replying to this common question, with question after question, after question...is an irritating habit of posters in *nix forums and is unnecessary here. Please stop doing so, and just answer the question:

how does a user delete an unnecessary apple id from his/her apple store, so as to delete updates that the user no longer wants to see and cannot initiate anyway because the apple id in question is not theirs and therefore the user cannot login anyway.

Those of us that are comfortable with root access and comfortable at a shell prompt should be able to zap the offending appleID with a simple command, and then the annoying update(s) in the Apple Store would disappear.

Please, Chris CA, stop replying with unnecessary questions and just give us the terminal command that will do this.

    Thanx

*THERE* we go. Now *here* is the kind of answer I was looking for. It doesn't work on Mountain Lion root accounts, but this kind of answer is at least in the right direction.

It doesn't work on any version of Mac OS because it is for jail broken iOS devices.

    Sigh....here is the answer.

If you have an update in the App Store that requires signing into an account that's not yours, it's because there's an app on your machine that has, in its Contents, a special file that is causing the problem.

For example, on my machine, I discovered a copy of Final Cut Pro left over from a former user of my old laptop, that was causing the problem. The old laptop was running Snow Leopard and so I never saw this problem.

If you don't need the app anymore, simply move it to the trash, empty the trash, then reboot. That solved the problem for me.

If you want to KEEP the app, here's a way somebody suggested to fix the problem. Since the first solution worked for me, I didn't have to do this so it's not verified:

    1. In the App Store, purchase the Twitter App.

    2. In the Finder, right-click on the Twitter app, and choose Show Package Contents.

    3. Choose Contents. There should be a file in there called _MASReciept. Copy it.

    4. Right-click on the app that you suspect is causing the problem, and choose Show Package Contents.

    5. Choose Contents, and in that folder, Paste the new _MASReceipt file over the old one.

    Cheers

Not really, This thread & this forum is for the iTunes store on the iPad.

Either way, simply sign out of the iTunes store and sign back in with the correct AppleID.

Or just enter the password for that username it is asking for.

Sadly none of this explains why I can download new aps from the app store but not update old ones.

So, Chris CA, can you further anythng since I have answered the questions you posted in response to my original post? (see below for reminder)

It doesn't matter how many times you suggest this, it still doesn't work!

I have now recreated my old ID (in addition to the changed one), and entered credit card details to activate it. Now when I try to update an app, the old username/password is accepted, but then the 'installing' button just disappears and nothing further happens. When I exit the 'App Store' app and restart it, we are back to square one, no apps updated.

I assume that although my username and password are now as they were before, there is probably some hidden code which is now different as it's effectively a new ID. This appears to have confused the system even more.

Select one of these old app, right click - get info.

Look at Summary tab. This shows the account name this items was purchased with.

Is it what you think it should be?

On my Mac, yes. I then used iTunes on my PC and all the items had the original ID, even those new apps I downloaded since using the new ID.

But the PC copy of iTunes gave me the clue to what was wrong, I had been using a developer ID and not my iTunes ID. Someone a long time ago suggsted I should have a different ID for development. Perhaps that was a bad bit of advice.

    Thanks for patience.

    Glad you got it sorted.

Having an old AppleID and forgetting about it is the problem much of the time (which is why it gets suggested over & over to check & recheck).

People get a different ISP/email and think they need to get a new AppleiD because they no longer have that email address. Then they have a problem updating apps/downloading past purchases (as is the case here).

Just  update your AppleID with new info/email address.

    ThisisdannyVega ,

This is by far the best solution I've found. I work in a repair shop and we have to back data up before a restore. I was having customers returning because they are propted to enter the password for an Apple ID that wasn't theirs when updating apps. After confirming that the customer was logged into iTunes, iCloud , ect. with the correct Apple ID I just deleted the apps and redownloaded with their Apple ID. Problem solved!! I also deleted all apps from our iTunes to prevent future issues. Thank you!
