Q: Mavericks and MacMini - after sleep mode windows resized and glued to left upper corner

Hi!

I have MacMini and HDMI monitor. When I go to bed, I use sleep mode and off monitor using power button (I don't like standby light). When I woke up, I press on my touchpad to wake up my MacMini, after that I stand up and turning on monitor. All works fine, until I installed Mavericks. Now, after turning on, all windows changed size to very small and glued to left upper corner. I can't resize or move window. Only shutdown app can help. But, I can't shutdown Finder, I need reboot MacMini. It's very annoying.

As I understand, this problem appear, when I wake up MacMini before turning monitor on. When I turned on monitor and after that woke up MacMini, windows don't change his sizes.

What can I do to solve this problem?

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.4), OS X Mavericks

Well, I wrote to Apple Support and recieve this advices:

Let's begin with what's called an SMC reset.

    1. Shut down the computer.

    2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.

    3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.

    4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time. If we do this correctly, literally nothing should happen, the computer should NOT turn on.

    5. Wait 5 seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

Test out the system to see if issue is resolved. If not working, proceed to the next steps for resetting our PRAM.

    1. Locate: Command, Option, P and R.

    2. Turn off the computer.

    3. Turn on computer.

    4. Press and hold the above buttons before the gray screen.

    5. Hold these keys until the second start up chime.

    6. Release keys. (If you hear a third chime, that's okay!) Then let the computer reboot.

I complete both steps and after woke up my MacMini with powered off display. Windows stayed on his place, no one window moved to left corner. OK, I continue testing, you can try this steps too.

This also happened to me with my new Mac mini which came with Mavericks. What I did was change the default sleep settings from 15 minutes to about 20 minutes for the computer sleep time, and the display sleep time I put to about 18 minutes and Voila! This has fixed my problem so far... Please let me know if this has worked for anyone else!

I've done an SMC reset and reset NVRAM but I still have the problem when I use HDMI-HDMI connection from my mac mini.

Most times it sleeps and recovers fine but then when I think it's sorted my Finder or Terminal window moves to the top left.  I think they all used tomove, so maybe that's progress!

Using mini display port to VGA connection everything works fine.

I've tried various sleep settings, but HDMI-HDMI connections always exhibit window relocation problems sooner or later.

It seems the HDMI -> HDMI connection is the problem. The only change I made was to switch to the Mini DisplayPort using a mini DP to HDMI adapter, all other cables, hardware, and software the same. No more problem.

Same problem for me, slightly different process. My Mac mini is also connected to an HDMI monitor, but the Mac is set to never to go sleep nor do I turn off the monitor with the button. But the Mac does turn the display off in the OS and then the monitor puts itself to sleep when it stops detecting an input signal.

To test I set up a hot corner to put the display to sleep. If I move the mouse there and then move it again before the monitor itself goes to sleep, no problem. But if I sleep the display in the OS and then let the hardware monitor go to sleep also (when it detects no signal after a few seconds), then I get the problem.

I have not tested a different HDMI cable or the second HDMI port on the monitor; the number of people and the different brands of monitors used seem to rule those out.

I have tried all sorts of solutions too. At first it looks like they work then a few sleeps later it comes back. Mostly seems to happen to Outlook for me, not sure why that app is the worst, but can still happen to Chrome or VMWare fusion.

Today it has been worse than normal. I have had to reset Outlook 4 times already. Really sick of needing to close the window then open it again. I am using Slate to save window positions then restore them after I open / close things. Previous to that I had to manually move and size the stinking window every time.

At this point Mavericks is annoying as I gets in my way every day. Still sorry I upgraded.

I have this happen but only with Mail and only if I've had it set as 'hidden' when I put the computer to sleep. All I do Is quit Mail and then when I open it again it's fine. Will see if anything here stops it happening!

my mac screen windows are sticking to the far left also, and cannot open or resize windows after logging back in from logout window.

only solution (temporary i have found) is to go to system preferences, display, reaize the monitor to one down, then back to original full size, then it "unlocks".  Have to do this several times a day.

Are you using HDMI-HDMI connection?  If you are then have you tried an alternative e.g with an adapter via mini display port?

My windows relocate whenever I use HDMI-HDMI but are fine when I connect mini display port to VGA.

If you are on HDMI-HDMI what monitor do you have?  Mine is an AOC 2757.

I was able to resolved this on the BenQ GW2750 by turning on the "HDMI Auth-switch" setting on the monitor.  By default this is turned off, so the monitor excludes the HDMI input when trying to determine which input to use, despite the fact that I had manually switched to HDMI input. For whatever reason, either the monitor or the mini can't figure out what's going on when they wake back up.  I suspect disabling auto-switch all together and just have it manually point to HDMI would have a similar effect, but I stopped when adding HDMI to the auto-switch worked.  Hope this helps someone without having to replace their HDMI cable.  Perhaps other models of monitor can have the issue resolved in a similar fashion as well.

I too am having the same issue with windows being unmovable, repasted and resized in the upper left of my screen with my 2013 mac mini (ivy-bridge) when waking from sleep. I hope Apple resolves this issue in a timely manner :-/

I reverted to HDMI-HDMI and tried turning off the auto detection on my monitor (AOC 2757).  At first I thought it had fixed the problem.  I ran for 2 days with no wandering windows.  But then the fault struck again.  So back to Display Port - VGA attachment.

Not an acutal fix, but I just noticed that once the windows are frozen in place, unplug your monitor from your mac, then plug it back in, the windows return to the middle of the screen and can now be moved and resized.

    Data Point:

    I have a 2013 Mac mini w/ i5 cpu, and a 2009 Dell Ultrasharp 24" monitor.

I had this same problem with an HDMI -> DVI connection, using the supplied apple adapter.

The Dell has a displayport connection.  Switching to that fixed my problem.
