    Hi,

Can we just DELETE the messages.app with all content and related files and reinstall it?

No.  You can only do this with iChat versions up to iChat 5

The OS comes on Install DVDs and these have an Options Installs folder which you can install just iChat from.

With version of the OS that are downloaded from the App Store this is not possible and only installing the whole OS will restore the app.

However if you do this whilst preserving the Home Folder of the User you are having issues with then the problem will remain.

Not to mention that it is work in another Mac User account there is nothing wrong with the App.

In the Finder use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key.

Use the Library item that appears in the menu.

    Navigate to the Preferences Folder.

Delete (Drag to the Trash) com.apple.ichat.plist and com.apple.IMAgent.plist

    Then com.apple.imservice.imessages.plist and com.apple.imessages.bag.plist

Also remove the com.apple.ichat.AIM.plist and the Jabber, Yahoo and Subnet ones.

IMAgent is a Support app and holds the Account info for Messages.

The iChat also list the accounts (and all the preferences in the app).

The AIM, Jabber and Yahoo ones hold the info about the individual Buddy list accounts.

The Subnet one holds the info about your Bonjour connection.

As IMAgent starts when the computer does Restart the Computer.

    Restart the app.

You are most likely to have to re-enter your Apple ID at least.

Any other account should be pulled from the Keychain.

There is an another possible cause exists, if your Mac was in support and had main (mother) board replacement technician could forget to change serial number on new board, so if you have serial like this Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 12.43.23.png

you need to take Mac to support again.

    HI,

You have replied to the Original Poster (who only seems to have posted twice in this tread anyway).

You will notice that their specs state OS X 10.7.3 as does my first reply  (it was February 2012)

Your answer only applies to Messages 8 Mountain Lion OS X 10.8 after the OS X 10.8.2 update.

    Hi Ralph

Finally got round to doing a full clean install of Mavericks.  Before I did anything after installation i tried to log into Messages but still the same problem.

I can only assume now its an issue with either my account or my router/provider

    Thanks anyway

    Paul
