Q: Cannot adjust Sound / Volume

I can't seem to adjust the Sound / Volume on my Macbook Pro. I've tried adjusting by pressing the volume keys on the laptop as well as on the Sound setting in the System Preferences.

 

Now I know how to fix it, but it requires me to do this every single time I reboot or power on my laptop. Plug in a headphone in the headphone jack and unplug after. That solves it and I can then adjust sound / volume. I have searched throughout google trying to find a solution to the problem and cannot seem to fix this.

 

There is sound coming out of the internal speakers even though I can't adjust the sound, I can hear it.

 

Heres a screenshot of whats going on.

 

Please, it would be amazing if I can get this solved without having to constantly plug in and out a headphone just to get my speakers working.

    Had the same problem and just fixed it!!

     

    Try this...

     

    Go to System Preferences => Sound => Output

     

    Select Line Out, or Internal Speakers from the list.

     

    That should do it!

     

    Somehow, it has jumped on Digital Out by itself!

    If you've tried everything else without any results, I had the same problem and solved it by plugging in a pair of headphones with volume control, and after fidgeting with plugging and unplugging the headphones several times while turning the volume up and down on both the headphones and the computer, it started working again.

    Go to sytem preferencesaudio/midi set up>click output tab and highlight built in speakers, source built in speakers.  If no joy, look in the headphone jack and see if there is a red light on, if there is try taking a headphone and plugging it in and out several times, if that does not work, try a Q tip with the end cut off, or a wooden tooth pick (nothing metal or conductive, and try putting in the jack and GENTLY "massaging the jack. There is a micro switch that sometimes gets hung up in the digital mode and this can sometimes free it up.  These are the most common fixes, there are a few more obscur fixes, but try these first.  Hope this helps.  All the best

    Read thru the other posts, there can be a number of things that can cause this. Try them one at a time and post back if none works for you.

    I just had this problem again.... it has happend a few times before, but I've found a (couple of) solution that will work:

     

    1. My problem almost always occur related to my headphones. I dunno why....

    My solution is to reinsert the headphones, then restart the MBP and pull out the headphones again as soon as the screen is black.

     

    2. If 1 doens't work, try resetting PRAM first or after. Do so by resetting or turning on your computer while holding down P+R+ALT+CMD and letting go after the first white screen. Then your PRAM is reset and the computer will restart.

     

    Atleast one of those two should work.

    Had the same problem but i just waited about 5 miutes while playing music and it seems to ajust now.

    I fixed mine by just plugging in my headphones and taking them out.

     

    Not sure if it will work for you, but its worth a try

    I ran into this problem last night. Tried everything in this post. The only thing that worked for me was turning off the auto open feature for Ituens and restarting the system. Now it works fine. I would recommend NEVER booting up with Itunes set to open on restart.

     

    Nothing having my music at the ready was a bit of an inconveince but it's a small price to pay to be able to actually hear it. lol.

    Try this everybody, reset your computer, when it starts up, press and hold Command R. If you have File Vault on, type in your password, if you don't have File Vault on, you don't have to type in your password. From there, a window will open up and you will click Disk Utility. From there, you will repair your hard drive known as Macintosh HD. If you have File Vault on, your hard drive may be locked. Click on your hard drive and click unlock.

    What Warren West said helped me. Hold "Fn" and pressing the volume keys.

    What I did and it worked

     

    go to audio midi setup (find it with spotlight0

     

    select build in output

    change the format and back

     

    It now works fine

    I had this problem as well, but all I had to do was go to Sound in System Preferences, click on Output and move the indicator for Output volume at the bottom of the page.

    1 - Spotlight - "Audio Midi Setup"

     

    2 - Make sure "Built-in Output" is selected

     

    3 - Select:

     

    Format 44100 HZ - 2ch-16 bit Integer.

     

    Fixed many problems!
