Q: Since installing Mavericks, system preferences opens on start up.

How do i stop this from happening? I looked in Users, but it is not in the list of apps in the start u pane.

    Try control -clicking on the icon in the Dock, then go to options, and see if Open at Login is checked there.

    Perhaps System Preferences is still open when you shutdown/restart. OS X's Resume feature will re-launch any app that is open at shutdown/restart if there is a tick as shown in the image below:

    Thanks to both of you, but

     

    Eric, I looked and the Open at Login is not checked.

     

    Paul, that is not the case either. I always make sure that box is unchecked. I am also meticulous about closing all windows and programs before i shut down.System Preferences is the only app/program that opens at start up.

    There are two things listed that I can see (there may be others) that are known to often cause problems with otherwise healthy Macs - CleanMyMac 2 and SIMBL. Try uninstalling both items to see if it solves the problem.
