Apple "put it back" awhile ago. Hold the option key (or ⌥⇧⌘S)

Dec 11, 2013 5:28 AM in response to oris Friesenby pamtree,I agree the old colored lines as tags were of great visual aid. The new colored dots do not provide any level of usability apart from dividing files. Why did they changed something that worked perfectly well. The coloured file/folder names were great!

Dec 11, 2013 7:39 AM in response to pamtreeby johngoodman6,I agree! The Labels were much better than the new Tags. I think they changed it just because somebody needed to do something to keep their job.

Dec 11, 2013 1:46 PM in response to johngoodman6by petermac87,Great deduction. Or they changed it because it wasnt used my many people. Whatever their reason, they have made the decision and for now you can either get used to the tags or use your backup to return your last system set up.
OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version
Other than that, all you can do is give Apple feedback on how you feel about losing the coloured labels. The more feedback they recieve, the more chance there will be of them considering returning the feature. Unfortunately many are complaining to Apple about lossof coloured 'Folders' which was never a feature of OSX to my knowledege, thus their feedback will be ignored, most likely.
FEEDBACK http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
Good Luck. Many miss them

Dec 13, 2013 9:24 PM in response to petermac87by Deedgee,I agree with all here. The colors were critically important. I can't believe they changed them. Also, like somebody above I agree that tags and colors are not mutually exclusive. You could have a blue file with a red dot. You could have a blue file with a red dot and a yellow dot. Take all the colored dots you need, just give me back the colored files!

Dec 14, 2013 9:07 AM in response to herbert17by Barby Gale,I was on the phone with AppleCare yesterday and the advisor told me he found an application that is available to download called "Pathfinder" (version 6 I think) that restores labels, for $40.00. I am going to try it.
I was actually contacting them about getting Rid of Mavericks altogether and going back to my previous OS X.7 (or whatever I had before this). He said with Time Machine I can do it--just go back to the backup before Mavericks was installed. HOWEVER, I would have to save all my files that I have altered AFTER I installed Mavericks, because those changes would not be saved but disappear essentially. That would be a rather daunting chore to say the least. So I will try the Pathfinder app above and report back to this post to tell you how it went.

Dec 14, 2013 9:26 AM in response to Barby Galeby herbert17,Barby, I started this message chain and checked out Pathfinder based upon a previous suggestion. It is really a work flow/process software which I did a trial. For the price to correct the problem and the fact you must use the software to see the colored folders, I felt it was not worth it. Just my opinion.

Dec 14, 2013 9:29 AM in response to Barby Galeby Barby Gale,Ok, I downloaded it. There is a free trial for a month. Plus there is an upgrade to that orig app that is $19.95 after the orig $40 if you want. Miracle of miracles my labels are all back and colored as I have them.
HOWEVER (and this is unfortunate) anything on the desktop (as of now) still has the stupid tag dots. So the Path Finder app only converts to labels anything that appears in it's "finder" window, which is different and separate from the finder that comes with Mac. I tried dragging a file with a colored label in the new Path Finder to the desktop and the file name reverted to the stupid dot, and not the colored label. Big huge bummer.

Dec 14, 2013 9:31 AM in response to herbert17by Barby Gale,Thanks. I will try the free trial and see if it helps my "work flow" which wasn't that good to begin with. I am very spacially oriented and have always used areas of my desktop to cluster projects, which were then categories in importance according to color. Apparently only way to do this is to revert to previous OS X.7 something that I had.

Dec 14, 2013 9:59 AM in response to herbert17by DABbio,Yes, the Pathfinder "solution" has been around this thread for quite awhile. I think I got about as far as Barby and quit. Is my memory faulty, or in the "old days" (i.e., pre-Mavericks) days, didn't you just have to right click on a filename in order to bring up the label color menu? I don't want to have to do more than that!
Good to hear that AppleCare, at least, is aware of the issue. Perhaps the geniuses are churning away on the solution in Cupertino right now. Doesn't seem to me that a hack of their own OS should be such a problem.

Dec 14, 2013 11:34 AM in response to DABbioby sunnyjohn,Good to see this discussion continuing. If you just want the coloured folders back, obviously it's not worth paying $40 just for that, so Pathfinder is a no-no anyway. Maybe if this thread keeps going and one or two others write to Apple, we might get them back. I've no particular wish to return to pre-Maverick, so let's see,

I still cannot ever remember having coloured folders in OSX.

Dec 14, 2013 1:51 PM in response to Barby Galeby Deedgee,I don't care much about the $40 if I can get my colors back. But I don't quite get what you end up with. Once you get Path Finder do you now use it as your Finder? That would be okay perhaps as long as it wasn't too weird.
Or, do you now have two "Finders," the Apple one and the Path Finder one. That seems prohibitively weird, as Barby Gale appears to be saying. Is that what you're saying?
