Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing when connecting your iPhone to iTunes. I would be concerned too if my device was not recognized in iTunes.

Before I posted my question I had tried everything that's suggested except to totally remove iTunes then reinstall it. I've spent hours trying to fix this but will now try to uninstall and then install iTunes. Hope that does it.

Ended up having to do a complete uninstall and install. Worked perfectly.
