Q: Aperture 3.4.5 Won't Remember to Open my Camera

Running Aperture 3.4.5 on 10.7.5 and my selection in Aperture preferences > Import>  "When camera is connected open______" I have selected to open Aperture. However the setting isn't remembered and I have to import my photos otherwise. The setting seems to revert to "no application" after I shut down my computer. Is there a way to make this preference stick?

It may be a problem with a broken Preferences file:

Quit Aperture and move the file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist   from your User library in your Home folder to the Trash.

Log off and on and try again to start Aperture.

How to remove the preferences is described here: Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics

No, I tried that, I logged out after throwing out the preferences, logged back in and reset some prefs, logged back out and the pref reverted to "no application".

Perhaps the problem is in iPhoto or Image Capture. Try to change the corresponding settings in iPhoto and Image Capture.

    For example, in iPhoto:

I did go to iPhoto and the setting there is "Aperture" as well. In Image Capture the only device I have is my scanner and I don't see any way to add my camera.

    For Image Capture try this:

    • Open Image Capture.
    • Connect your camera (or card reader) to your computer.
    • Select the camera in the Devices list.
    • Choose Image Capture from the “Connecting this [device] opens” pop-up menu.Click “Show device settings” if you don’t see that pop-up menu.

It used to work this way. Since Mavericks I also have trouble to get the Image Capture preferences to show, but the "Help" still stays, that is the way it is done.

Did changing the iPhoto preferences chage anything?

Ok, in image capture I selected: "connecting this camera opens…" Aperture.app and for "Import to" I also selected Aperture.app.

Quit Image Capture, ejected my camera. Logged out and when I logged back in the Aperture pref has gone back to "no application".

No, setting up iPhoto did not change anything. Isn't this frustrating!

Does it work for a different camera or card in the Card Reader? For your phone or iPad?

It may be a permissions issue.

Try to repair the permissions on your Home folder.

    • Select your User Library in your Home folder.
    • Show the Info panel (From the Finder's main menu bar: File > Get Info  ⌘I )
    • Reveal the Sharing & Permissions brick, click the padlock icon, authorize with your administrator password.
    • Change the permissions for "Me" to Read&Write
    • Press the gears-icon and select "Apply to enclosed items".

I tried, did as you have shown. Logged out and logged in again and still there is no change. "no application" is again in the pref.

By now you have tried all I can think of.

The apps to open when a camera is connected are also stored in the "Image Capture" preferences file.  Try to delete this file from the User Library in your home folder

    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Image_Capture.plist

and again log off and on again.

If all fails, reset the permissions on your Home Folder, but don't even think about it without a current, working backup of your system.

How to, is described in Linc Davis post here:   Re: Reset Home Folder permissions and ACLs Error

I have never needed to do this myself, so I am not sure if I can guide you in this case.

Nope, deleting Image Capture prefs did not work. I'll do a clone of my system and then try the last solution.

When I enter the code in terminal this is what I get:

    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null

    Bad substitute.

    Bad substitute? I'm lost.

I went to stage 2 of the instructions and accessed the reset thru recovery. Logged in and out of Aperture and I still have the same problem. It looks like this is unsolvable.

Have you tried this as a different user?  Make a new user account log in to it and try it and see what happens.

At least this way you will know if the problem is system wide or just with your user account.

I created a guest admin account. Opened Aperture and a dialog box appeared asking me if I wanted to set Aperture to open when I connected my camera. I selected yes, went to Aperture prefs to verify that it was set, logged out, logged back in and there it was, Aperture was indeed still selected. Maybe there is a way to get this first dialog box to appear in my regular account. Maybe, maybe if I can get to that I can fix this?
