Over the past year, I've had 11 go bad. Apple, Monoprice, Blue Rigger, Moshi, Gigaware - each brand randomly fried after weeks of working.  The two I posted about above did so within hours of eachother.  I've used them with three different brands of monitors and two different brands of TVs.  So what, pray tell, could be doing it if not the MacBook?

No longer working doesn't mean that the MacBook physically destroyed the cable.

The MacBook can't supply enouh power to destroy 1, let alone 11 different cables.

So by that logic I should be able to take each one of these cables and expect them to work on let's say my other two MacBooks or my iMac?  Nope.  Dead.

Swap the cables, they work for a few weeks, and then show up dead randomly.  Rinse. Repeat.

I post back here periodically because endless number of people continue to have this problem which apple has no intention of fixing. Last year I had these issues for around six months. I tried every possible solution proposed here, including switiching the monitor off then on whilest waking the mac up from sleep, pram nvram resets, etc etc the list goes on, but many of the methods didnt work, and some only worked temporarily. As a last try I bought a mini displayport to hdmi cable from NEET. To my surprise it worked. I actually tried to sabotage it because I didn't believe it would be a permanent fix, but all my attempts failed. Its now been over a year that im happily connecting to different monitors, tv's, and projectors, with no connection issues.

I know how frustrating this experience is because I was in it for over 6 months, but the mdp to hdmi NEET cable has worked for me so I suggest all of you try it too.

and therein lies the problem.. they ALL work for a while - some several months and some just a few hours - with no rhyme or reason behind the sudden refusal to work any longer...

My suspicion is that its an electrical problem which messes up the adapters. I was using a moshi for about 6 months with no problems. Then one day I forgot to take it to a mates place and he offered the use of his adapter which was some cheap $h1t. That was the beggining of my woes, it worked that evening but when i got back home and used my moshi it immediately stopped working. I bought two other recommended adapters and both worked for a short while then broke.

But now over a year of constant use with the cable and no issues.

Well, everyone.  I can now say this MacBook has burned through 12 different mini DisplayPort to HDMI or DVI adapters in the past year.  I arrived at work this morning, plugged in the one I keep connected to my external monitor, and now it's dead.  This is absolutely incredible.  I have a feeling this will likely be my last Apple laptop purchase.

Get the mdp to hdmi CABLE from NEET.

I probably will order one.  I took my Gigaware one back to Radio Shack this morning and they exchanged it for me.  I plugged it in and it seems to work fine...for now.

I have a MacBook Air 11" connecting to an HP 2210m (22") computer monitor on its HDMI port using HDMI cable and rocketfish thunderbot/mini displayport to hdmi adapter.  On first connection (2 months ago) it worked and I was also able to connect to a 37" LG TV in a similar manner

Lately, it became intermittant and then failed to display at all.

I replaced the rocketfish adapter at the store today. Tried a new one and it did NOT display either. I also tried a different HDMI cable... no Joy.

Finally I thought it might be a power issue since I saw the MacBook Air screen pulse in an out while it tried to send video to the external screen/device. So I plugged in the charger and unplugged my logitech mouse/usb plug. Then when I tried again it flashed a few more time and came up ok. Later I put the mouse usb plug back in.

Once the rocketfish gets warmed up it seems to use less power. At the beginning I think there is barely enough power to drive the adapter over the USB port so I recommend you have no extra devices attached, perhaps dim display a bit and plug battery charger in. Worked for me!

And just in time for the new year, my MacBook Pro has now fried two more adapters!  I now have 4 dead ones sitting on my desk in front of me.  I wouldn't believe this if it wasn't happening to me, but this is outrageous.  I'm about to bid this laptop a farewell.  Good luck to everyone else!

Same problem here. I went out and bought an hdmi cable and mini display to hdmi cable. I got everything hooked up and all that was displayed on my tv was the standard screensaver image. I ended up going into my system preferences and opening my display options. I then opened arrangement and clicked detect displays. So system preferences>display>arrangement>detect displays. Everything appears to be displaying correctly except i dont have sound (which you can always link your macbook up to seperately you just might have a slight delay). Hope this helps some of you.

For sound go into sound preferences and select your monitor.

Mdp to htmi cable.

That only works with mid 2010 or later models, earlier than that and a separate cable from the audio out on the Mac is needed.
