Your Events are automatically saved and can be used in as many different Projects as you like.

Sorry, looking back at my initial question, I realised I wasn't clear enough in my intention. I've accrued tons of clips inside imovie and instead of simply deleting them to save space, I was wondering if there was some way to export them off the computer and save them to an external HD along with the finished product in case I need to edit the project in the future.

OK. I understand.
You can connect your external drive and then in iMovie choose File>Open Library>New to create on new Library on the external drive.
Then, within iMovie drag the Events you want to move to the new Library you just created.
It's really simple.
Just do all your housekeeping within iMovie not the Finder.
Sorry. I just noticed that you are running iMove '11. The above instructions are for the new version of iMovie.
