Q: Problems with Airplay to Apple TV after Maverick install

I have a mid-11 iMac that I have connected to a Apple TV 3 with ethernet (not wireless).  Up until I installed maverick yesterday all was working well with no streaming issues when watching TV from my iMac via Airplay to my Apple TV.  After the upgrade the streaming has been seriously downgraded with bad pixilation and hesitancy with the picture.  It is pretty much unwatchable now.  What has changed with Mavericks to cause such a downgrade in picture quality to the Apple TV?

OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), Apple TV 3

totally same situation, closing firewall is useful for static picture, but for video streaming.

    please fix it!

    Hi Gordon,

    As I said, I was having the same issue. The solution was simple, probably goes for everyone with this problem;

    1. Go to settings on Apple TV

    2. Reset Apple TV

    3. Try airplay now, it should work jerkless

    4. If it still jerks, put video output to 720p

    Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately after doing all that I still get substantial pixelation and lag with Airplay mirroring, rendering Airplay nearly useless.

    I'm having this problem too.

Airplay to Apple TV seems to be useless, rendering grey screen.

I currently use Macbook Air 2013.

    Waiting for the solution here...

Hey Guys, I finally solved my issue.  I tried everything on this discussion to no avail.  I have late mac 2011, ATV 3rd Gen running 6.0 update and was having all the problems you were on here, although my iphone was connecting via airplay mirroring no problem.  Called Apple, sent me over to wireless department, and while I hold I have a revelation. I have a Cisco dual band router, and a Belkin extender. My ATV was connecting through my extender so while on hold I decided to bypass the extender and voila, it works now.  Now I connect directly to my Cisco router on both my ATV and MBP, no airplay issues whatsoever now.  Don't need the extender for ATV, only need the extender for other devices when I go outside.  Hopefully this helps someone out there, I know how frustrating this can be.  Thanks, Jon

This has happened to me all the way theough Lion to Mountain Lion and into Mavericks. However, a restart of either the iMac, ATV3 and Time Capsule/Airport Extreme/Express or all of the above solves the issue.

Ive developed a further problem since Mavericks however. Using AirPlay now seems to have an effect on the internet connection. when AirPlaying for a while it will suddently disconnect and the iMac will no longer be able to find the ATV. The Wifi icon shows a strong signal but icons such as DropBox and Logmein are greyed out or have a black 'X' respectively. Using Safari confirms that there is no internet connection even though it shows as still connected. Wifi diagnostics shows nothing. The only way to fix it is disable wifi and re-enable.

I upgraded to Mavericks on my 2011 MBA and my ATV3 is now always pixelated when I use AirPlay. I have tried the suggestions to reset/restore/unplug and plug back in. None of the combinations have improved pixelation. I  also tried all of the resolution choices for the ATV3 and switched it to extend my desktop instead of mirroring. All software updates have been made on both devices. Is there a software fix for this issue in the works?

    Hey, Guys,

I have to say, the issue is "partially" improved by 10.9.1 maverick update.

The "pixelated" is fixed, but the frame rate becomes very unstable.

Maybe you guys can try the 10.9.1 for your issue.

Mac OS X 10.9.1 has fixed the problem for me.

    Pixelation is gone.

The delay between mouse/keyboard input and display is noticible but manageable.

Streaming video works well (with audio / video just a tiny bit out of sync).

I've got the problem streaming iTunes to ATV and Sonos Play 5. The audio is terrible. This started after upgrade to Mavericks in my iMac. I've run same iTunes audio through my Macbook which I haven't upgraded to Mavericks. The result is clear, crisp sound through my Play 5. I'll try all suggested fixes mentioned especially reboot and reset factory settings for ATV and router. Really, though, Apple should have been on to this a while back.

I´d like to add to the advice on turning off the firewall that was previously posted. Here´s what worked for me to solve this issue:

    Turn off firewall.

    See if this helps.

If it does then go back into System Settings and turn on the firewall.

Add "coreaudio" to the list of exceptions that the firewall won´t stop.

    This should solve your problem.

I tried everything (updating all software, re-installing ATV, killing coreaudio and rebooting, using sudo commands etc) before without a good result but this effectively have solved my issues.

    Good luck everyone!

After upgrading to 10.9.1, initially solved the pixelation issue. Now, it's pixelated again and the frame rate is horrible.

I tried turning the firewall on/off, but that did not help. Any other ideas? Anyone else experiencing pixelation again after upgrading to 10.9.1?

    Yes, same issue over here.

As I posted earlier 10.9.1 fixed it but since some time in January the problems are back.

    Video is extremely laggy.

This happened to me just the other day. Everything had been fine with 10.9.1, then the next time I connected to AirPlay for extended desktop, it displayed highly pixelated video - obviously, slow bitrate. I checked for other network activity, but found none. Restarted the Mac and all is good once again.

If it occurs again, I will dig deeper and see if I can get a hint as to the cause. As a side note, I just checked my firewall settings and although it is enabled, coreaudio is not explicitly configured.
