Dec 16, 2013 11:20 AM in response to eaststarby fruhulda,Enter is the key on the number pad and return is the one large keyboard with the characters. I presume you are talking about AppleWorks. You didn't say.
You can try with AW quitted, to delete the com.apple.appleworks.plist which you find in Users>your name>Library>Preferences

Dec 16, 2013 12:00 PM in response to eaststarby Peggy,The return & enter keys on a full-size keyboard have different behaviors in AppleWorks. It is normal behavior for the enter key to insert a page break. The keys are labeled differently on an Apple keyboard & others manufactured specifically for Macs. If you are using a generic Windows keyboard the keys will both be labeled enter but will work differently as described above on a Mac.
To just enter a paragraph break use the key above the right-hand shift key.

Actually, pressing enter (the one on the number pad) inserts a column break. On a single column document, the visual effect is the same, provided the document has only a single column on that page.

Dec 19, 2013 9:38 PM in response to Peggyby Barry,HI Peggy,
Me too, but this one sticks in my memory as it was one of the more common things I had to correct in work on AppleWorks by my elementart school students. The enter key on the extended keyboard was conveniently located to accidently receive a resting notebook the student was consulting while at the keyboard or a misplaced arm that drifted onto the keyboard while the student was thinking. Between that and extra returns at the end of a document, much of the class wound up waiting for their writing project as the HP LaserJet made its way through the 1100 or so (empty) pages of one classmate's project. Oops!

Barry

Dec 21, 2013 8:31 AM in response to eaststarby eaststar,Ok thanks for the replies. I think my problem is the keyboard as its non-Apple and the normal entry key doesn't work so I use the return on the extended keyboard
A further problem is that printing to pdf just produces blank pages. Again thanks in advance for any
help on this one.
