I downloaded the update you mention, but nope: it still doesn't work.
The new iMac still tells me I don't have the latest updates. My old iMac cannot find the new iMac.

Dec 27, 2013 5:27 PM in response to mende1by cath51,Will my photos in iPhoto 9 (8.1.2) migrate to Mavericks unscathed? How about documents? Will the restoration solve this? Of course, I do have old applications that I won't transfer (old version of GraphicConverter, for example). I plan to buy a new version of that anyway.

Dec 27, 2013 6:19 PM in response to cath51by dianeoforegon,If you copy over the contents of Pictures to the new computer, when you launch iPhoto it will auto upgrade your old library.
Yes, your documents and text files should all open in the newer versions that work on Mavericks.
Office 2004 for example is not compatible. You would need to upgrade to Office 2008 or Office 2011. Since Office 2011 is already three years old, you might want to get the subscription Office 365 since it will auto give you the upgrade when the next version of Office Mac is released. At that time you can decide whether to buy the boxed version or continue with the subscription.
See the App Compatibility Table to check what works under Mavericks.

For bookmarks, you can bring over the Safari folder from your User's Library. Note the User's Library is now hidden.

May 1, 2014 6:19 PM in response to Barney-15Eby Motorcycle Michael,Thank you Barney! Seems to be doing the trick here, 10.5.8 to Mavericks. (BTW, only installs on 10.5.x OS.)

Jul 17, 2014 11:26 AM in response to mende1by jocaan,Hi,
Re your reply of Dec 15 2013 concerning transfer of data from Leopard to Mavericks, I have done exactly as you suggest. The problem is that I cannot open documents that have been transferred. I'm told I have to open them in Pages 09 which I don't have.
Any ideas?
Thanks, Jocaan.
