I tried that - I can complete the share-file dialog, it says "preparing media to share" and stops, but I can't find the file - tried saving to desktop, documents, and hard drive. Finder can't find it, iDVD can't find it.

Do you actually have iDVD?
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.
Thanks to Klaus1 and to QuickTimeKirk. I do have iDVD and the share function finally worked - I shut down, started over, and gave iMovie a good long time to prepare the media. Even at 540 it took a very long time (maybe a half hour - for a 16 minute movie - after the blue spiral disappeared) and my problem was that I hadn't given it enough time. Anyway, I was able to complete the process and burn the DVD. My version of iMovie is from the Mavericks release and doesn't have an Export option - it has Share.
