Q: iMac late 2013 + Mavericks + USB Sennheiser - input freeze

Hi

Since Mavericks i have a problem with my USB Sennheiser Headset.

When i connect it directly to the iMac, every time i start FaceTime or mumble, after 30 seconds? 1 Minute? the microphone get very noisy/scratchy.

After i attached an old USB 2.0 Hub to the iMac and connect the USB Headset to the USB hub, the Microphone is ok.

But after that i had 3 times freeze of all input devices ( usb Mouse, wireless magick mouse, wireless keyboard) in 6 hours.

I need to hard shutdown the system.

Last time i saw this error message in the log.

24.10.13 22:56:03,000kernel[0]vtd[0] fault: device 0:20:0 reason 0x6 R:0x1305000
24.10.13 22:56:03,000kernel[0]USBF:    9437.472    AppleUSBXHCI::UIMCheckForTimeouts - HSE bit set:15 (1)

Someone have some idea?

Thx

René

Hey airbornemint.  After waiting over two months, 3 Brand new iMacs, and A **** of a lot of wasted time and money on my part because of my job,  I think it's safe to  complain a little bit.  I've talked to 6 different senior advisors and a few engineers and nothing is resolved yet.  I've been nothing but patient and People like me and "cdanr" are helping by complaining because we are at the end of troubleshooting every possible solution from a consumer's point of view and it's the complaining that we are left with.  Now it's Apple's turn to trouble shoot and GET IT DONE!!!!!!  That's it for me.

Thanks very much, fleabass. We have every right to complain indeed.

I just got a reply from the editor at Mactrast, thanking me for the report.

Maybe some press would help to get the ball rolling.

I think some press would definitely help. The more attention on this the better. It's amazing that even supervisor-level Apple techs haven't been informed of the issue.

Does anyone here affected have access to the 10.9.1 beta? Normally I wouldn't suggest anyone should install a beta version of OS X unless they really need to, but if there's a fix for this issue then it could understandably be worth the risk for some people.

Ok, I splitted up my fusion drive today in two single drives.

After this I installed Mavericks and Win 8.1 on SSD and formatted the HDD to store some data.

The problem is gone away. Its really a problem with the fusion drive driver.

I've noticed, as mentioned in the earlier pages of this thread, that the incidence of the freeze increases exponentially with my iPhone 5s just being plugged in via USB. I can still induce the lockups by attempting to use my Logitech USB headphones with Plex without fail but with the iPhone simply plugged in, it will lock up randomly and seemingly without warning.

So now I have the iPhone charging via the USB to AC adapter until Apple sorts this out. However, because of iTunes quirks with losing devices for WiFi sync it's annoying not to be able to plug in by USB.

I think this is probably going to require a firmware update. At least there is good evidence from reports in here that Apple is at least aware, and hopefully working on a fix.

It'd be awfully nice if Apple themselves publicly acknowledged it.

Hey cdanr > I can confirm this. When I hook up my iphone (5s) I get random lockups, however, when I connect my iphone to my led cinema display (which is connected to the imac through the thunderbolt port and usb) I get random lockups too(!). Same goes for my ipad and my Drobo d5 (usb3).

I got round this by hooking up the d5 through thunderbolt and NOT connecting the led display's usb cable. iphone and ipad can charge through the led display but sync using wifi.

Thank you very much for your report, Erik-H.

So it seems that one absolute cause of random lockups is when an iPhone is on the USB bus, no matter if it is on a hub or connected to a USB port of another connected device.

How many GBs are on the SSD? Do you have the 3TB or 1TB Fusion Drive? Think I'm going to boot off my SSD instead of running of my USB3 external...
