Q: Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

I am old and set in my ways.  I like having the Finder open a new window when I double click a folder.  Since 1984 I've arranged Finder windows in positions and sizes that suit me and I have never seen any reason to change.

In Mavericks however there does not seem to be a way to default to, "double click opens new Finder window".  My choices under Finder preferences are, open in the same window; or open in a tab.  I don't care for either.

Does anyone know of a way to restore the traditional Finder behavior in Mavericks?  Thanks in advance.

I'm currently updating, but if 10.9.1 contains the same bug, then I will file a new bug-report right away!

I cannot believe Apple didn't fix this...

In my opinion this bug alone would justify an OS-update! So, come on Apple, give us 10.9.2 with a USABLE Finder!

Only a few people have the problem. Troubleshoot closer to home, or else tell Apple.

Yes. Sadly however that is impossible to accomplish with a single hand, or with the mouse only, as one could do for the 29 years between 1984 and early 2013.

Post deleted by me.  This topic really makes me angry because there was no reason for this Finder change.

Scott, there are many, myself included, who think like you. No reason for Finder change. No reason for coloured labels change. Just NO REASON. I'm back with Mountain Lion, which is an improvement over Mavericks. Perhaps Apple will improve Mavericks by stealing a few ideas from Windows. Yes,things are that bad.

All running fine on all my Macs under Mavericks. If you require a new OSX to suit your individual needs, you are out of luck. We all have to make some adjustments each new OSX release. Most do it easily, which is why you just a few of the many millions of Mavericks users coming here to complain.

Couldn't agree more Wizard. Since Lion , Apple seems to be trying to make my desktop into an i pad. In any case, I went back to ML. To " peter(must work for)mac87 ", OK..we get it..you're happy

I have found that the option activated through right-clicking on the toolbar of hiding the toolbar is a vague but not particularly acceptable substitute as to get one function back you are sacrificing others.

The fact is that the desktop OS is becoming like the iOS - all iCandy no functionality - but some of us use our Macs for work and do need them to do 'complex' things like open folders in new windows.
Since losing this functionality (and coloured labels) I have taken a serious productivity hit to my workflow when working on particular projects.

Not because I’m lazy or am too old to adapt or am incapable of coming up with a new workflow or am such a luddite that I won’t adapt but because REAL functionality has been removed and there is no practical way around this loss.
I have lodged multiple feedback reports with Apple but we know that is just one big black hole.

As Scott Newman said “Other than being arbitrary and capricious, there is no reason that anyone can provide as to why this user action was changed.  It makes nothing more efficient.” This is a statement as true as they come & that’s probably part of the reason that Apple keep deleting his posts.

And petermac87 "All running fine on all my Macs"... don't you mean on your one MacBook Pro? Thanks for your ongoing valuable input pete.

I run five Macs in my studios. And you can ask all you wish here but as people have been told on numerous occasions, we are only users as well. We cannot speak on behalf of Apple and speculation is prohibited in the terms of use you agreed to when you joined this site. So only Apple can address you question as to why they removed the feature.

So so true. I've really only used Macs in my working life and I love them and these functions are part of my daily work process. And it does lessen productivity a lot by losing Labels for instance. I love change, I love new systems, I always am up there for improvements. But these things are of no help to anyone. So why? And yes I've sent feedback myriad times.

Yes John, and it's more difficult if you use a mouse in your left hand. Just hate having to cross the keyboard with one hand to get a folder opening in a window.

Just so that petermac87's mind is put to rest & he can leave this thread alone assured his 'work' is done here is the feedback I've just sent to Apple (again) -
"I’ve been an Apple user for nearly 20 years & am very disappointed with the way Apple is heading with the OS.

There appears to be a drive to make the desktop OS operate like the iOS.

The removal of the ability to open folders in a new window & the move to coloured dots instead of labels for example.

Why has Apple chosen to remove such simple and long-standing functions?

I would understand if you added new options but to totally remove functions & dumb-down the Finder is just absurd.

Having the Finder operate like a tabbed browser or an iOS App is neither useful nor practical. It’s a hindrance to workflow.

In future when Apple releases a new OS perhaps provide a tech support document to list what has been removed. This would allow users to make a balanced decision before they ‘upgrade’'
