Q: crazy windows after resuming from sleep

after resuming from sleep mode:

* mac in sleep mode

* HDMI of my tv switched off (back to TV mode)

all openned windows are reduced in top left corner and really difficult to get them back at the right place.

I'd never this behaviour in previous release (I was running OSX 10.7)

seems that there is a bug somewhere does any body know how to report this or experiment the same issue?

Not sure what's causing this be Safe Mode deletes system caches that may help.

Startup your Mac in Safe Mode

A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.

Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.

unfortunately this does not solve my issue.

My Mac mini is plugged to the TV via a multimedia amplifier (Marantz). if I just turn on / off my amplifier, the problem appears.

All openned windows are stiched to the up left corner and it is not possible to move them.

Only solution is to close the session and reopen it or reboot.

    desktop-bug.png

Is you can see here in the screenshot the VLC window is sticked in top left, and no way to resze or even move it.

:-( hope we will recieve a fix for this issue ...

A fix will depend on finding the cause, which is difficult with the tiny amount of information you have provided.

Your post isn't clear if you actually booted into safe mode? That helps diagnose third party software issues.

Also is VLC up to date?

If you want a better diagnosis you will need to be more precise in what you have tried. Also EtreCheck will show what is on the system. You can update or remove items to see if that makes any difference.

Yes as said in previous post, I've applied the recommended procedure and rebooted in safe mode then restart in normal mode.

VLC is up to date but the issue is not about VLC, it is just an example, as said also, the issue can be reproduced in all the programs:

    Mac Finder,

    Google Chrome,

    Itunes

    VLC ...

The pbm is more for me about the desktop manager ... an proably only guys using their TV trough an amplifier will observe this bug.

    To be extremly precise agin:

    Here is my HW setting:

MAC mini Mavericks <-HDMI-> Marantz Amplifier Audio Video <-HDMI-> Samsung TV

    Here is the issue:

    Action:

    Switch on/off amplifier

Change amplifier source (ie DVD, TV)

    Mac goes in sleep mode

    Issue:

all openned programs are resized to verry small and sticked to the top left corner

    How to work arround:

    close session and re open

    reboot

Now there is probably some traces in the window manager where the issue is reported... if apple is able to give me the name of the file, I could be able to send them.

    kind regards

You seem to have missed the point of Safe mode. Did this issue appear when running in safe mode or not?

Safe mode is meant to show if the issue is caused by a third party extension, startup item or if it could be something else.

Please boot into safe mode & perform the steps that make the issue happen & report back if the issue happened.

I can provide feedback on the report, but the safe mode test shouldn't be skipped over.

All the usual caveats apply, backup before you modify the system, delete the items (or move them to another disk or folder if you are worried about deleting the wrong thing) but ensure the originals are gone or updated.

Use the Finders "Go menu > Go to Folder…" to open the hidden ~/Library (your users library).

Reboot for the system changes to take effect.

I'm trimming the report back to the items I think are worth looking into…

    Random Notes:

Do you need the tuntap startup items? Is it up to date?

What is com.synology.SynoSIMBL? Update or remove, if it uses SIMBL it could be unsupported.

    http://www.culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php

Also remove the SIMBL plugins in the foders listed on SIMBL's homepage.

I would also remove the launchd jobs & login items to the bare minimum to ensure they are not causing the window issue.

Is Google drive up to date? Other issues have reported weird Finder crashing behavior.

    https://discussions.apple.com/message/23687550

    Startup Items:

    Inside /Library/StartupItems/

These have been discontinued by Apple since Mac OS 10.4. They are responsible for making changes at a system level. Remove them all or spend time ensuring ALL related software is up to date. You need a very good reason to have anything installed in here.

    Kernel Extensions:

    Inside /Library/Extensions/

These also load third party code, but they insert it into the 'core' of the OS. These can be safe, however you must ensure the related tools or apps are up to date, otherwise the system is basically built upon quicksand. Remove them all & see if the OS works better.

    Launchd jobs: several types

    LaunchAgents          - Stored in /Library/LaunchAgents

    LaunchDaemons      - Stored in /Library/LaunchDaemons

User LaunchAgents  - Stored in ~/Library/LaunchAgents

These are all background jobs, they are not necessarily bad, but if they are loading old code it could be doing untold damage to the performance & stability of the entire OS. Focus on the System level jobs (the ones inside /Library - the system level) also look at 'failed' jobs.

EtreCheck gives a status on launchd jobs…

    [loaded]                  - a running job

[not loaded]            - jobs that are set not to run, basically harmless, remove them unless you plan to use the associated software (if it is up to date)

[failed]                   - jobs in a crashed or unknown state, it could be forking processes or using all the system resources, remove these.

    User login items:

Applications and helpers that are managed inside 'Systems Preferences > Users and groups > Login Items tab'.

These are loaded at the 'User level', consider removing all of them whilst you troubleshoot.  When you decide to re-add them ensure the software is up to date.

    3rd Party Preference Panes: & Internet Plug-ins:

    /Library/PreferencePanes/ and ~/Library/PreferencePanes/

    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/

Once again these items all must be up to date, or remove them from your system. If the prefpanes manage additional software use the uninstaller or see the developers site for uninstall instructions.

Read the list of Internet plug-ins carefully, there are often duplicate Flash player versions that won't help stability, it's just wasted space too.

Don't forget to also update Safari's extensions in it's preferences (if you have any).

Re-run EtreCheck after cleaning up to see if items have returned (some apps will reload the background jobs when re-opened, so either update or remove the software).

Exactly the same problem over here, MBP 13" mid-2012 non-retina i7. Many times when resuming from sleep some windows will be usually resized and moved to the top or top left corner, just as described. If I try to resize or move the windows, they will retain the original size and position as they were after resuming from sleep.

The problem seems to be per application. If I close the affected window and open a window within the same application, it may not have exactly the same size as the originally affected window, but will display the same behaviour regarding not retaining any changes in position or size.

This is one of the worst bugs in Mavericks, it affects me at least once a day, forcing me to restart affected applications, which may be very disruptive.

This was *not* fixed in the recent 10.9.1 release (just got from lunch, and here we go again restarting a couple of aps and restoring their state).

    Same to me Billy,

Now the idea would be to report officially this issue to Apple to have a chance to get a fix... How we can do that?

I'm not familiar with apple products (I'm a new mac user) so I don't know where we should post this issue.

If you know, may be you could post the bug refering this discussion ...

I confirm that it is really disturbing, and as it is quiet reproducible, I do not understand why it is not yet fixed!

Wait and see :-( Apple is finally not better that the others ... just a NORMAL software company with bugs ...

Didn't the info above solve this for you JPhi-M?

http://apple.com/feedback is where you submit feedback/ bugs.

Billy, you should probably create a new thread since this is marked solved people tend to stop reading to offer advice.

I haven't seen this behaviour on clean installs of 10.9, so that suggests it could be related to what is installed etc.

Are you also using an external display like JPhi-M?

I've juste tested but it does not help for me, I do not have twice 60Hz

I've trided to switch from 60Hz to 50Hz and select back to 60Hz and the windows are back normally placed. (Except google chrome which is resized)

But probably the bug is near this!!!!

    My setup:

MAC mini (HDMI) <-> MARANTZ 1403 <-> TV HDMI

I have the issue when just switch on / switch off my Amplifier or if I change the source on my TV.

This issue was not present, with the exact same setup, on Lion.

I just preferred to re-create my account, move only the data (Documents, Downloads (...), and from ~/Library I copied Keychain and as far as I remember Safari's data) to the new account. I used mv command from root logged terminal. Then I had to set up the new account manually (anyway, I think the bug is because I didn't make fresh reinstall of Mavericks, and other similar stupid problems may occur because of my ML-created account; I also didn't want to use 3rd party troubleshoot software; finally, it was easier for me). For now I don't see any problems..

The issue is likely the amplifier in the middle.  HDMI has a protocol called Extended Display Identification Data (EDID).  EDID is not a bus protocol - in other words each device provides to the prior device in the chain it's information.   Therefore, your receiver (when powered on) is sending it's own EDID information to  your Mac.  When the receiver is powered down, it likely switches to a pass-through mode where electrical signals from the display to the Mac are unaltered.  In that case, the EDID information will come directly from the display itself.
From the Mac's perspective, when you power on the receiver it looks like you unplugged the display and plugged a different one in.  It's also possible your amplifier either is trying to relay the EDID information, or doesn't support EDID at all.  No matter what, you're going to have to remove it from your HDMI chain.
The best way to connect the amplifier in this case is to connect the HDMI connector directly to the display, then use the audio out (usually an optical digital port) of the display to connect to the amplifier.  You would set the display to the other HDMI port, and set the amplifier to use whatever setting the digital input is linked to.
Unfortunately, not every HDMI device works perfectly with every other HDMI device.  Most everything is optional, so while one chipset might support all the features, some may only support the minimum necessary.  It's a bit of a crap shoot when you mix manufacturers.
