Dec 10, 2013 7:12 AM in response to hansiaby johpo01,I have this issue as well. Struggled a couple of days to get TM to even connect to my ReadyNAS Duo. But after trying all sorts of things: Restarting NAS, Router, Upgrading firmware on NAS, Running Repar Disk on Sparsebundle, Reset of TM(deleting com.apple.TimeMachine.plist), Re-selecting Backup Disk, Restaring MAC etc.. I finally got to the stage where TM said "Preparing for Backup". But unfortunately after a while I got the messsage: "The backup disk image ".........sparsebundle" could not be accessed (error(null))".
I should say that TM has been running fine for the past couple of years in my environment.
I'm out of ideas. Anyone out there has some good ones?

Reset and initialize my ReadyNAS to factory default, customize it, resetting TM and then do a first full backup. So far so good. The backup has now started and will probably run for the next 15 hours or so.

I know this isn't the answer you want, and I also know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.If you want network backup with Time Machine, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external hard drive connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.If you're determined to keep using the NAS for backup, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple.) -
Dec 10, 2013 3:03 PM in response to Linc Davisby johpo01,I don't know what say to other than this: If TM supports networking standards there should be absolutely no problems no matter which 3rd party product you're using. It all comes down to zero and ones.
Apple cannot and should not support any 3rd party NAS products.
It reminds of the "good old days" (i've been working with IT since 1972) where IBM would not support disk subsystems from any 3rd party vendors (they also claimed that it would be risky to store data on these disks). Everyone knows what happened:-) EMC and Hitachi are still in the disk business.
BTW I see a lot of problems from people using Time Capsule as their backup device. So I don't think that would be my first choice.

Dec 10, 2013 9:19 PM in response to Linc Davisby hansia,Am taking your advice. Back up to external HDD to avoid any more complications. Hopefully future patches to maverick will resolve the NAS problem. In the meantime it'd be an oversized paperweight
Am waiting for 10.9.1 before attempting a factory reset on NAS and setting up TM again. Thanks everyone for your contribution!

Dec 11, 2013 8:24 AM in response to hansiaby johpo01,FYI. My TimeMachine now works with my ReadyNAS Duo after I added a line to the /etc/hosts file: "192.168.1.13 NasDuo" and reselected the backup disk in TimeMachine. Hopefully it will continue to be that way

Did it the brute force way with a factory reset for Duo. It works now!

BTW there are a number of entries in the forum regarding updating of the /etc/hosts file. I used "sudo nano /etc/hosts"

Open with text edit.
Delete original - you will be asked for your passwod.
Drag edited copy to /etc/ folder - you will be asked for your password.
Done.

Everything was working fine, until I (allegedly) "upgraded" to Mavericks. Then all **** broke loose. I sure miss the OS stability of Snow Leopard. Mavericks is horrendously slow and has wrecked havok with my Mac.

I think the latest version is 4.1.13 and a lot of issues with Mavericks and Time Machine have been ironed out. I'm on Mavericks 10.9.3 and was having a lot of problems until a couple of months ago.
