Q: Harmful Radiation With AirPort Express

Recently I've purchased an Airport Express. My wife is worried about harmful radiation of it on our body especially our twin 3.5 years/old childs.

Now I really don't know what should I do? continue or discontinue use of  airport? After turning my  macbook WiFi  on, I can see about 7-8 wifi password protected networks around our building and so my network has been added to these list.

I usually use wifi network about 2-3 hours/ day.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

They meet all FDA requirements with that respect. You'll receive more radiation from cosmic rays than the AEX.

Surprised you are concerned about it but not your computers.

AirPort Express with passed FDA requirements?!!  How can I see that certificate?

    Ask Apple.

If you aren't concerned about your computers, then why are you worried about an AEX? It's harmless. Your children are 3.5 years old. Why would they even be close to a radiation source? Be sure to keep them away from your microwave oven, though.

Yes. They never close to AirPort. But these waves are in all of our home

Along with cosmic rays unless you cover yourselves in aluminum foil. There are all sorts of waves in the atmosphere passing through your bodies. Yet, you are all still here. It's a fuss over nothing.

Oh, don't use a cell phone.

really.  you probably should get a bubble to live in or move to the remote wilderness.

    Peace, Clyde

I heard a funny comedian do a routine about allergies along the same line: If you have a child who is deathly allergice to peanuts ......... Don't grow attached.

You can add to that a cordless phone.

You may not know it but the power output for DECT phones is aprox 10x the power of wifi.

The output of the wifi is generally set to less than 30mW..

To avoid RF radiation in the modern world.. you will need to move to a cave in the wilderness.. sorry but owning a cell phone is almost irrelevant.. the towers are pumping out the signal 24/7 as are TV stations and radio stations and even electrical wiring.

None of which is harmful in any reliable testing done to this point. If the power gets high enough to begin ionization then it is harmful.. ie a microwave with the door seals broken. But so far we have lived with transmission of high power RF signals for last century since Marconi invented wireless and we are still alive.

I am fully aware of all of this. Having been a ham radio operator most of my life I have consistently survived the RF radiation of my, typically, 100 watt transmitters. RF on 10 meters at that power can cause a painful burn if you were to grab an antenna wire at the voltage peak. It will fully light up a 40 watt, 4 foot long fluorescent tube.

But there is practically nothing I know of in a normal household that would produce enough radiation of any sort that would be harmful. This includes a cell phones with their 250 mw output versus the 30 mw of Wi-Fi.

    Here's an interesting graphical comparison.

My dad died recently at 82.. clearly the radiation got him in the end.. !!

He worked all his life on radio and TVs.. we used to run a company building marine two-way radios.. but dad never got enough.. he had a ham rig at home. Think of all those years he used to tune every radio that left the factory.. up close.. clearly killed him.

This is called sarcasm in case other readers are taking it seriously.. I'm sure Kappy can see the point.

Lucky we are not in transit to Mars though!!

    Really?!   250 versus 30 ?

250 mw when calling with cell phones or  even without calling?

On transmit, not receive. It's much lower on receive or standby.

Then Wifi is more harmful than cell phones. We stay connected with Wifi for hours, but call with cell phones a few minutes ! Hours versus minutes .

If this is such a big deal for you, then I suggest you start using land lines and toss your cell phones, all your Wi-Fi devices and your computers. Oh, get rid of the microwave oven, too, and all other things electronic in your home. Then move to the country, but stay away from power lines in the vicinity. Buy cows, pigs, and chickens and start a garden. Don't use pesticides or any other chemicals.
