I'm disgusted with mac Mail not saving my Sent messages. I use exchange. If I sent from my iPhone the sent messages are saved. From my Mac Book Air with Mail they don't.

Apple is becoming a new Microsoft....

In my case it's isolated to one specific recipient. All other sent emails are there under sent.

I am also using exchange, and had similar difficulties. Mail was saving sent messages, then stopped saving them when I sent them from my mac, but still saved them when I sent them from my iPhone. I fixed the problem by going into Mail->Preferences->Accounts (choose the Exchange account)

Check the "Use autodiscover service" box (this allow some settings in mac mail to be set by the exchange server)

Then set the "outgoing mail server" to: Exchange (Exchange)

This server was added to the outgoing mail server list by the exchange server.

After I did these changes, my mac mail started saving my sent messages to the sent folder again. I can now see them on my Mac, and on the server when I log in to the Outlook web access client.

    I hope this helps.

By the way, I am using a MacBook Pro running Mavericks.

Welcome to modern times people. Today you need microsoft products to make a mac run propperly. Only the toys from apple are working reliable. For not loosing important mails we can save them as drafts and send them later from our iOS devices. This is obviously the only stable workaround if you don't use Excange (yet).

I also have the same problem.

I am running IMAP account on OSx 10.9  - I believe they call it Maverick.  Didn't have this problem before "Maverick"  I know they have gone as I get responses and there is the mail I sent in the mail they send me, but the mail I sent is not stored in the sent items.  I use this computer for my business so it is vital that records are kept.

I think I may need to go back to Outlook.

Someone said that a clunky solution is to BCC.  Can this be done automatically as I cant see myself remembering every time.

Apologies for any misspelling etc, I find it amazing there is no auto spellcheck in this!

Problem seems to have been fixed with 10.9.1 update!!  I just sent 30 consecutive test emails from my previously temperamental account on Mail and every one of them was saved to my sent mail.  Can anyone else confirm?

Same issue here.  My Macbook Pro shows the sent mail but my desktop iMac does not.  Grrr....

What "Exchange".  I don't see it on mine.

    Thanks for your help.

Exchange (Microsoft Exchange) is a mail system, if you are using an Exchange account you will know.

    I THINK I HAVE  FIX

To recap where we are as this is a long thread

Clients using apple Mail.App and IMAP

Mail server is stock Dovecot on 10.6.8 Server

On the client, in Mail.App preferences, make sure that "Store Draft Mesages on the Server" is unchecked

Since I did this, I have not been aware of losing any outgoing messages

I still have "Store Sent Messages on the Server" checked as I need his.

Having the same problem with OS X 10.9.1 and Mail 7.1.  Seems to happen more with messages containing large attachments.  Mail is setup to access IMAP account hosted on a SmarterMail Enterprise 11.7 server.

I searched the system logs and found this:

"1/8/14 12:45:43.735 PM Mail[352]: Error Error Domain=MCMailErrorDomain Code=1030 "The IMAP command “CREATE” failed with server error: CREATE Mailbox already exists." UserInfo=0x600001064580 {NSLocalizedDescription=The IMAP command “CREATE” failed with server error: CREATE Mailbox already exists.} occurred while trying to append messages to outgoing store. Ignoring and proceeding with delivery..."

I'm not sure why Mail would be trying to create a mailbox when moving the message to the "Sent" folder.

This blog is 36 pages.  Wondering if someone would be so kind to help me.

I am new to the mail app.  I set up a YAHOO account.

When I send an email.... the email shows in the Sent folder in the app.

But when I check the sent folder on my iPhone or in a browser... none of my sent messages are there.

I want them there.  Thanks for any help.

(p.s. I tried the link above by Ismail, and when I click on  'use this mailbox for' the options like sent, draft, etc are greyed out and not selectable).

    Thanks.

It depends on the email system that an email account uses. The original email system is Post Office Protocol (POP); this is largely being replaced by Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP). The main difference between the two is that POP downloads messages from the mail server and stores them locally (eg. In the Mail application of an iMac or Macbook), while, if your email account is IMAP, you simply view messages that are on the mail server. The messages remain on the server so that other devices that you might have can also view them.

In practice, IMAP messages (read, sent or deleted) can be synchronised across different devices whereas such synchronisation is usually not possible with POP email accounts, even though some POP systems allow you to keep a message on the server after it has been downloaded. So, if an IMAP account has been set up on all your devices, they should all show the same messages after they synchronise. However, this will not be the case with POP accounts.

I have found that some of my email accounts get set as POP on one device and IMAP on others so there isn't complete synchronisation. My guess is that your accounts are not all set to IMAP.

By the way, there is a third system used by Outlook.com accounts. This is called "Exchange" and will allow synchronisation.

Outlook.com does not support Exchange, it is an Imap system. (POP is also supported)

MS Exchange is the exchange system you refer to, and it does support synchronization.
