Q: Categories gone ?!?

Really Apple. It took you form 2009 to 2013 to STRIP functionality from Numbers/Pages/Keynote? REALLY?!? I switched from Excel to Numbers a few years back and now you reward my loyalty by taking away so much functionality? Thank you Apple, really thank you! I've been a Mac user since '85 but you've never let me down this much.

No more categories in Numbers?!  So now I have to rebuild all my spreadsheets that used categories? I guess I'd better rebuild them in Excel. At least they don't take away functionality their users have come to rely on.

Please Apple, tell me you will bring back ALL LOST FUNCTIONALITY within a few months. PLEASE!!!!

This feature was, indeed, dropped in Numbers 3.0.  Here is a link indicating Apples intent regarding a variety of features.

You may provide feedback to Apple using the menu item "Numbers > Provide Numbers Feedback" and you may continue to use the previous version of Numbers which is located in the folder "/Applications/iWork '09"

    HI m,

Apple is your audience for request such as that in your last line, and Apple does not regularly monitor this user-to-user discussion space (although they do seem to be paying some attention to the iWork applications areas recently). You can send your mesaage directly to Apple using Provide Numbers Feedback, found in the Numbers menu in Numbers.

PS: If you were previously using Numbers '09, and do rely on categories (or other features currently missing from Numbers 3, a reminder that unless you have removed it, you will still find Numbers '09 in the iWork folder in your Applications folder. There's nothing preventing you from continuing to use that version until Numbers 3 is ready for your needs.

    Regards,

    Barry

    Hi m,

I have icons (aliases) for both Numbers '09 (Numbers 2.3) and Numbers '13 (Numbers 3.0.1) on my Dock:

    Screen Shot 2013-12-21 at 5.13.17 pm.png

Numbers 2 (3 column chart) on the left. Numbers 3 (4 column chart) on the right. Drag the app icons from Applications folder (Numbers 3) and Applications > iWork '09 (Numbers 2) to your Dock. They will become aliases. Right click on each in turn and Options > Keep in Dock.

Both versions can be run at the same time. I enjoy comparing features in each version. I just need to be careful when editing an N2 document to Save in N2.

Tip 1: Open the app (N2 or N3) first. Then use the file menu to Open or Open Recent.

Tip 2: If you (accidentally?) open an old doc by double clicking in Finder, it will open in the (now default) N3. Close it before making changes.

Tip 3: If you find that N3 has automatically converted a document, N3 will allow you to Export "backwards" to N2:

Tip 4: The latest update (Numbers 3.0.1) now has a warning after you edit an old document after "accidentally" opening it in N3:

So Apple is listening to feedback! (but only by direct feedback, not through this user forum) .

Tip 5: Work on spare copies of your heritage docs, and backup, backup, backup.

    Regards,

    Ian.
