Apple have unethically and irresponsibly made it so we cannot delete permanently unwanted APPS on iPhone & iPad from our purchased list or iCloud simply because they take up space and then Apple Charge device owners for extra space.

We have received notification from Apple our space is limited and our devices cannot be backup up, "please buy more space to continue"!! Not right and not good!!

Our space is taken up with kids games that are no longer required, however we are being asked to pay for space to keep them. Could this be a funding conspiracy by Apple?

FRUSTRATING on this scenario Apple have the world held to ransom.

I really wish people would stop spreading MISinformation.

Your purchased content is stored on Apple's servers for the iTunes and App STORES. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH YOUR PERSONAL ICLOUD ACCOUNT STORAGE LIMITS.

If your iCLoud storage is filling up it is NOT because of your purchases from the iTunes or App stores - those purchases are NOT stored in your personal iCloud account.  They ALREADY are stored on the stores servers and are available for re-download from there - NOTHING to do with your personal iCloud account and your default 5GB of free storage.

    Thank You for the explanation!

Can you please now explain HOW to permanently Delete unwanted APPS from the purchased list in the APPS Store or iTunes. Because they do take up iCloud space when the devices backup. I have turned off and deleted all apps from backing up to icloud, however the used space remains the same and I am being asked to purchase more!

    1. You cannot delete apps from your purchased list - you can only hide them

    2. NO, the apps DO NOT take up space in your personal iCloud account when you backup.  Apps are not part of an iCloud nor an iTunes backup and never have been - since they ALREADY reside on the store's servers anyway and are accessible for redownload to you from there.

I don't know of a clearer way to state that - your APPS are NOT part of your backup and DO NOT take up ANY storage space in your personal iCloud account.

The data that Apps store or generate is part of your backup, but the Applications themselves are NOT.  If your iCloud space is filling up, then removing Apps from your device will have NO affect on your iCloud storage at all, as you've already noticed.

If you want to reduce the size of your backup you need to delete DATA, not apps.  For example, transfer pictures in your camera roll to your computer and delete them from your iOS device (the camera roll is part of the backup).

Michael Black - you seem to understand how iCloud storage works... So can you please explain HOW we can find out just WHAT is taking up all of the space so that we can DELETE it as we have no desire to purchase additional iCloud storage?  I am (and I'm sure many others are) getting very tired of all of the extremely vague responses on here.

You can read what is backed up in an iCloud or iTunes backup here - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946

On an iOS device, go to your iCloud account settings and look in the "manage storage" section.  You can delete entire backups, but you cannot pick and choose what gets backed up to customize what is in the backup file.  You can turn off features that take up space, like sync'ing documents (if you are storing a lot of documents there, consider additional free or paid alternatives, like dropbox, box, sugarsync, 4shared, etc).  If you are sharing a single iCloud account for multiple devices, then get separate AppleIDs for each and create separate iCloud accounts for each so you do not have multiple devices all backing up to the same account.

Keep in mind that your iCloud mail content also counts towards your total 5GB free storage space.

Alternatively, don't backup at all to iCloud and backup instead to your computer with iTunes.

iCloud is a FREE and COMPLIMENTARY service from Apple - if you truly find you need more than the free 5GB of storage, then you're going to have to pay for it.  FREE and COMPLIMENTARY only go so far, and beyond that of course you will need to pay, as you would with any other company's services.  As I mentioned, there are additional free cloud services (dropbox and box probably being the most popular with iOS users) you can use to supplement your online storage, although they too all come with hard limits and if you exceed those limits, again, you will have to pay for additional space with those companies.

Thanks Michael - I actually do not store documents or music files on my phone - all music is on a separate iPod (which is not backed up to the cloud).  I deleted all of the data stored by my apps (as best as I can tell) and I also went through my cloud mail... The sent folder was filled with messages involving photos I had sent to myself so I could access them on the computer as I don't back up photos up to the cloud (too many, too much storage necessary). That helped but the phone backup is still quite large... 3GB presently.

I do have a lot of apps - they take up about 55% of the space on the phone... But if those are not contributing to the backup size then I'm not sure what is. Photos are taking up roughly 22% of my capacity - there are a lot I can clean out but I don't think that will ultimately do much for me overall.

I have never expected Apple to supply me with unlimited free storage - I only wanted to understand how I could manage my storage because I didn't see anything that could be deleted - the only things listed under Manage Storage are my last iPhone backup (3GB) and 43KB for Mail.

My confusion about all of this began when I got the backup error message regarding storage space. I had never gotten a backup failure until the iOS7 update.  After the first message, I cleared out what I could and was able to do one backup... The next time it tried to back up I got the error message again.  Today I deleted all backups from the cloud and after backing up the phone 1 time I'm pretty much back where I was.  I think my best option is to go back to backing up to the computer and stop using the cloud.

Update - it was the photos.  Have deselected photo backup to the cloud and the backup size dropped significantly.

Hello - I am new to this forum thing, so sorry if I'm just asking a question and now answering your question   I have the new iphone (5s) and my facebook is a version 5?  Even though the newest version is 6.5.1... I am VERY frustrated that I have not been able to figure out a way to delete the 5 version and reinstall the new version.  I have tried EVERYTHING.  I have managed my storage to delete the facebook app from backing up to the icloud, I did a backup and restored SEVERAL times, making sure to delete all the logins and any information on my phone that could link back to the version 5 facebook!  I have deleted (or "hid") the facebook app from my itunes apps and still, it downloads the version 5 from icloud.  HELP!

Yeah I noticed this fookin problem a couple years ago when I first purchased my iPhone 4s!

I like to try before I buy so sometimes I'll install a free app before I go ahead & purchase the priced app. Or I'll install 1 app & its similar to see which I prefer before I delete the one I don't like. But, on my history it lists all the fookin apps I've ever downloaded!

    This is TOTALLY ANAL APPLE!!!

If I delete an app I should reserve the right to delete it from my history too!

Or else what is this fookin game Apple is playing with its customers???

    It smacks of "Big Brother"!!

Are they working with NSA, CIA, FBI, ETC & this is part of profiling purposes so as to catalog what a "person of interest's" purchase history might have entailed?!?!

Anonymous should get on to this with Apple if they don't fix this once & for all! It's been going on for ever! & imo Aaple don't give a crap cause it serves a useful purpose for them & their handlers!

This article helped me delete the Apps in the cloud. I hope this is what you were looking for.

he iTunes Store does maintain a list of all of the apps that you have previously purchased or downloaded so that you can re-download them into iTunes or directly onto your device, but these do not take up any storage in your iCloud account—it’s basically just a purchase history linked to the actual apps on the App Store. In fact, if an application is removed from the App Store for whatever reason, it will also disappear from this purchased apps list. This is accessed either from the “Purchases” section found in the App Store on your iPhone or in the iTunes Store in your iTunes application on your Mac or PC.

If there’s an app in your purchase history that you don’t want to see on this list, you can “hide” it by going into your Purchase history in iTunes, hovering over the app that you want to hide, and clicking the small “X” that appears in the top-left corner.

So what is stored on iCloud

iCloud stores your iCloud emails, your iOS device data backups (what is in a backup -  - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946), your calendats, your contacts, your keychains if you use iCloud keychain, and any documents and data you set up to store there (like Pages and Numbers documents).

iOS backups to iCloud or in iTunes do not contain any apps, only data associated with those apps but not the apps themselves.

Your personal iCloud storage also does not contain your Photostream, if you use that service, nor iTunes Music Match, if you use that service.
