Q: Not Enough Space on iPhone to Restore Backup

I created a backup on my iPhone 5, reset the iPhone (Deleted all data), and am I trying to restore the iPhone from the backup. However, it won't work because:

iTunes could not restore the iPhone "My iPhone" because not enough free space is available on the iPhone.

Given that this was a backup from the same iPhone, there should be enough space to restore it.

More background information: when I did the backup, the storage space on the iPhone was almost full. Most of this storage space was used by what iTunes categorized as "Other"--space that stayed full despite deleting almost all data from the phone, including all photos, movies, Messages history, Safari history, etc. There were only a few apps on the phone, and nothing that would use much space. The Usage configuration pane didn't show any apps that were using this amount of space.

To try to resolve the problem, I took the backup and reset the phone. Now it won't even restore. Any suggestions on how to get the phone set up again, with all the (useful) app data that was there before, such as app data for game progress?

Thanks!

    Hi!

I pretty much have the same problem as bdub and am desperately trying to follow your instructions to remove about 20 SMS attachments files from an old backup in order to be able to backup a reset iPhone.

Basically I have no clue what I'm doing here but I seem to get stuck trying to create replacement files for the info-files I've exported.

How do I go about to do this more precisely? Haven't got a Mac, so do I create an empty Word-file instead? And how do I change the filenamne do get it to work? I did first attempted to use Notepad and name the original file X and then simply pasting the info-file's name when doing "save as". But when I try to import this file (after the original info file had been deleted) backupbot won't accept the file.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Thanks!

I followed your instructions, but when I try to import the file back in, I get an error message - error 2 - system cannot find the specified file.

I kept the same file name and tried importing just the INFO file. In my case, it's a MOV file I'm trying to get rid of, so I tried both keeping and deleting the .MOV in the file name, but I get the same result.

    Appreciate any tips!

    Hello Diane,

Which version of iBackupBot are you using? I downloaded 4.0.0 but it seems like some of the menus are different than in your instructions.

    Thanks

I just downloaded the 4.1.1 version & I've been able to just select the file(s) I wanted to delete and was able to delete them right out of the backup. In my case, I have over 6000 files in the "Other Multimedia" folder and I was able to just CTRL+Space to select muiltiples and delete them right out. I'm assuming the earlier posts in this forum had a much later version than this one.

I had same problem the issue is you need to have enough free space to restore the back up ...i had 16g iphone with 4g free space . when i tried to restore my back up i keep getting error message no enough space .

I had 5g photo removed those photo from iphone n stored on computer now i was left with 9g free space and 3 g used tried to restore my old data it worked. my understanding is when you restore it do not overwrite the data straight away it need enough free scape to backup.

As far as I can see iBackupBot does not have an icon for "Import files that exported before" so I can follow the directions.

    Hi Diane,

For the lastest version of ibackupbot I cannot figure out a way to import back into the Other Multimedia files folder.  Also when I export and deleted the first time I just completed deleted the contect of the folder I exported to.  I think I need to create empty files and then delete but am not sure.  Can you provide a little more detail around replacing all the Other Multimedia files so that I can restore from my backup file?

    Thank you,

    Emily

I bought a 32G iPhone 5 last week, but found out that the new iPhone 5S is coming out on September 20th.  Because of this, I returned my iPhone 5 and had my upgrade re-set so I can get the new one when it goes on sell.  Until then, I'm using an 8G iPhone 3G.

I tried to restore this phone from my back up, but because this phone doesn't even have half as much storage on it, it won't allow me.  I'm getting the error:  iTunes could not restore the iPhone "My iPhone" because not enough free space is available on the iPhone..

Since I really just need my contacts, I've tried not syncing my apps, pictures, or music to see if that will work, but I have been unsuccessful.

    CAN ANYONE HELP ME?

IBackUp Bot is amazing! I had to login to say thanks! My 5s said I have 8.4 GB of documents and data! I backed up to itunes, followed the steps for IBackUpBot and deleted the SMS section. Erased all contents and settings on my iphone, restored, and now I have 10.7GB of space available, and all of my stuff is still on my phone!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

    happy holidays!

This sounds a lot like a corrupt backup. The other has been growing, and I would say it has grown beyond the iPhones size and your only option is to restore the iPhone as new.

However, good news does exist. There is a program which can grab your contacts, messages, calendar, voicemails, and notes directly from the backup. Pictures look a litle harder.

If you download this program http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/

This program is also recommended on OSX daily and is one of the very few programs which will let you transfer music from your iPhone to your computer.

For your purposes here though, it is going to be the best solution.

    Good luck.

I know this is an old post, but I found it after looking up why MY "Other" and backups were so big.

My device, after removing *everything*, all apps/games, music, photos, etc, then clearing all caches, deleting all SMS conversations (the whole routine), still had ~2GB of "Other", and ~2GB worth of backups (locally and to iCloud).

I loaded iExplorer and saw the /Library/SMS/Attachments folder had EVERY image I've sent or received, plus thumbnail. ~2GB worth of images I didn't need, didn't want, etc.

A small update: Apple seems to have fixed the bug a while ago. Now when you delete a conversation in Messages, iOS deletes all the images and movies as well. However, it doesn't clean up any any space you lost when deleting messages back when iOS still had the bug. So, you shouldn't lose any more space in the future, but you still have to manually go in and clean up the space you've already lost. The last time I used iBackupBot, it has improved significantly. You should be able to delete the SMS Attachments directly in iBackupBot, without having to go through most of the steps mentioned in earlier posts. Good luck!

During the restore process, it seems that space on the computer hard drive is taken up as well, roughly the same size as the back-up files. And after this process is complete, the space si still used on the computer hard drive?

Does anyone know why this extra data is created? and better yet, where on the computer it is and if it can be deleted or cleaned out?
(i'm currently runnign low on hard drive space. Hope to remedy that soon.)

    Thanks.

BTW: PC Windows Vista. iPhone 4S. iTunes 11.1.5.5
