Hi - I boiught Snow Leopard ($20) and set an appointment at the genius bar. The ran a test on machine, erased the disk and loaded Snow Leopard, then upgraged it to Mavericks the new operating sysytem - no charge other than the Snow Leopard SW. So worked great!

Did you buy the Snow Leopard while you were there or before the appt?

Has anyone watched what they did to install the OS?  I don't have an apple store near me but would like to get one of these.  Has anyone tried following these instructions?

I purchased Lion when I upgraded from Mountain Lion so I already have the OS.

Hi - I bought it online and then when it would not install I set up a appt to the Genius Bar as a software loading issue - good luck!

Bought 2 MacBooks from the IBM EPP site, set up an appointment at the Genius Bar, took them in and asked to have them reloaded with Snow Leopard.  Only took about 30 minutes during the Xmas rush.  They loaded both simultaneously.  Service was great and the MacBooks are in excellent condition.  This is an outstanding deal.  I dind't have to purchase Snow Leopard or pay for support.  Couldn't have been easier.

Donniea100, THANK YOU, I have an appt Friday for the 2 I bought, so you just said:  Please reload with Snow Leopard??

I think I just said that I needed to have the OS reloaded.  I said that the drives were wiped so I needed fresh copies installed.  Basically, that was it.  No questions asked.  Very simple.  I left, ate lunch and came back in 30 minutes.  All done.  When I got home, I upgraded to Mavericks without any issues.

The Apple Genius bar was great.  The best support I've ever encountered.

thanks!  and then I assume Maverick is just the option off apple that you can just navigate to and download?  I'm not a MAC person so it's all new....

yes, I just installed from the App Store.  I suppose they could install at the Apple store as well, but i didn't ask them to.  I'm new to Macs myself.  Bought them for my kids.

How about pages, numbers which is word/excel?  Did you all have to purchase them?  any tips?

I think you can get them via the App Store for $19 each (and use them on all Macs you own).  To be honest, most of the kids use Google Docs in our school system so I didn't feel the need to purchase them.

I just took the laptop I purchased into Apple Store yesterday -

they ran a whole bunch of tests to make sure all the hw was working fine

(the battery was at 93%!) before downloading maverick for me - I had

purchased Snow Leopard (online from the apple store for $20, free shipping!)

as that is the last version that could be bought on a CD.

I may not have needed it; when I went to the applestore, they didn't even ask

about that (though the disk was still in the drive).

I left it at the store, as it would take a couple of hours to download (I was told)

    maverick.

Before going to the store, I called Apple Support to see if I could do it from

home.  The laptop even had some AppleCare time left on it!  But since I purchased

SnowLeopard, that gets me 90 days of AppleCare support.  Unfortunately, was

unable to load the OS from home, so he sent me to the apple store (and even made

    the appt for me).

The laptop I got had some minor scratches, but I was impressed that the battery

    was in nearly new state.
