Try something like VLC.

Dec 18, 2013 11:41 PM in response to Winston Churchillby WooDz,Sadly this hasn't helped because although I got a start screen the audio would stutter and when the film started the screen went black whilst the audio continued to stutter.
A night ruined. It's not often That my wide and I get the chance to sit down together and watch one of her favourite films and last night was a repeat, albeit with the hassle of updating various pieces of software including my Apple TV only for nothing to work after 2 hours.
To say I'm disappointed in Apple to deny my right to watch a a film is a slight understantment.
They can argue all day about protecting piracy but there a massive difference between protection and inhibiting ones rights. I cannot for the life of me understand why DRM protection should be applied to an original DVD inserted into a super drive and played back on a 2nd monitor. For the past 6 years I've been running nothing but Apple products for everything and In the past 12 months I'm slowly starting to become dissatisfied with Apple's protocols and customer support, or lack there of.
Now if someone actually from Apple customer services can reply to this thread with a link to a patch or anything else which will honour my right to watch original bought DVDs on my TV or my newly bought projector, Apple will be going some way in restoring my faith in their products and services.

Clearly AirPlay Mirroring is working fine with VLC, it's your network that is causing these problems.
The following article(s) may help you.

Wifi Diagnostic Software (for Mac users)
You may also find some help on this page, where I’ve collected some of the more unusual solutions to network issues.

Dec 24, 2013 7:07 AM in response to Winston Churchillby WooDz,I've spent the last days trying to view a film to stream over Airplay but this does not work.
Methods tried with all producing the same effect:
Playing a DVD via Apple's DVD player
Playing a film trailer via iTunes Store
Playing a purchased film that's fully downloaded to my MBP
All of these options send audio to the Apple TV but the Screen on both my MBP and Apple TV goes grey.
This is not a Grey/White Chequered screen but fully grey.
The only option available to me at present is to stream purchased content direct from my cloud account via the Apple TV itself.
There is clearly some problem here other than my network.

No, all those problems are network related except for the chequer pattern you get when you use DVD player which I've already explained.

Dec 24, 2013 7:48 AM in response to Winston Churchillby WooDz,So my network turns the screen on my MacBook grey?
I've read no other information about the screen greying out in any seaches made on the internet so far.
The trouble shooting guide doesn't even mention grey screens.
