With Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) iTunes no longer supports syncing Contacts & Calendars via iTunes. The supported method is via iCloud. The following link gives details on how to set that up: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/

That was my fear. I, for one, am not a fan of iCloud as my OSX is CONSTANTLY asking me to enter my password in my keychain for access. It is hugely annoying, always occurs at the wrong time and just generally aggravates me as a apple user. So - its iCloud or nothing. Geee... thanks apple. Please turn my question into a complaint!

There are a lot of complaints about dropping the sync via USB to a Mac, mostly seem to be those who have privacy concerns with the cloud. I use iCloud and OS X 10.9 has never asked me to enter a password for keychain access for iCloud. I do have FileVault turned on so need to enter password once at startup. I don't have time to research right now but you may want to post a new question about why that is happening to you and someone else may be able to respond with a solution.
