Q: Why can't I add my iCloud account to AppleMail in OS 10.9 on a brand-new MacBookPro? It can be set up, but won't appear in the account list.

Whenever I try to set up AppleMail for my iCloud mail account I get the dialogue to enter my credentials, but then when the list of services appears, this differs from what I've set in the iCloud system extension panel. Also, after clicking the add button, the iCloud account won't appear in AppleMail's account list. I deleted the mail-folder in my user lib earlier, but that didn't help. My office's account (IMAP via MacOS X server) works fine and also all my iOS devices do with both account types. Only my brand new MacBook Pro retina won't. Any suggestions?

Don't try setting it up via the Mail application, turn on M ail at system Preferences > iCloud > Mail > On.

I have the same exact problem. It is turned on in System Preferences but won't show up in the Apple Mail app. Worked fine on my 2009 MBP, but won't work after migrating to MBP with retina 2013.  10.9.1 on each. Weird.

I  too have this problem since migrating from my old machine running 10.8 to a new machine running 10.9.  Any luck?

One thing I thought might have triggered the issue was that I copied the Mail folder from my OS X 10.8 machine's user Library account directly into my OS X 10.9 machine's user library account, and that probably created some kind of version mismatch.

But then I just tried creating a new user account, and I can't add seem to add my iCloud email account to Mail there either, so at least I know it's not related to the Mail folder I copied from my user's library folder.  Perhaps something Migration Assistant did at a system level.  Did you guys use Migration assistant immediately prior to experiencing your problems?

    Okay, got it working!

My process was pretty straightforward (of course, everything is, in hindsight):

    (1) Go to my user library folder

    (2) Do a spotlight search for the word "mail"

    (3) Delete something that looks like it might be related to/possibly interfering with Mail's operation

    (4) Try Mail

I repeated the above process a couple of times and poof, Mail started to add my accounts!  First, my Gmail account, and then, after disabling and re-enabling my iCloud account inside System Preferences > iCloud, my iCloud account too!

The file I believe was the lynchpin was located here:

    • ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail

Give that a shot if you can't get your iCloud/Gmail email to show up in Apple Mail 7.1 (1827) under OS X 10.9.1, despite the accounts seemingly adding succesfully in System Preferences.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This may delete mail you have stored locally, so please do not attempt if you store your email locally (i.e. POP email setups).  I think for IMAP setups (e.g. iCloud & Gmail) this is just deleting the cached versions of the emails, so they'll just get rebuilt once the email is downloaded from the server again.
