Q: Folders in Mail linked to Gmail folders are empty

In Mail, I have set up numerous folders to hold messages I want to keep.  Most of these are in the Gmail section of Mail, where they represent counterpart folders in Gmail.  Using a browser, I can verify that Gmail has these messages in the proper folders, but on Mail the folders appear empty.  This is a new development.  Anyone know what's going on?  (Note:  the filed messages in their proper folders are also accessible on my iOS devices.)

Mail in Mavericks had had some issues with Gmail account. 10.9.1 fixed some of these but users are still reporting odd issues.

Often the fix in Mavericks is to remove an account then add back. However, since the settings in your Gmail account are also part of setting up Gmail, you first need to check your settings in your browser.

In your browser, log into your Gmail account.

Under Settings  > Labels, do you see either [IMAP] or [Gmail]/ in front of the folder name? Is it checked to show in IMAP?

Also under Labels, do you have the All Mail folder checked to sync? In the past, many users selected not to sync this folder, but in Mavericks Mail, it needs to be enabled.

    In Mail.....

Remove your Gmail IMAP account. This will remove all the messages from the account but they will still be on the server.

Add the Gmail account back to Mail.

You might want to add a root folder before connecting Mail to the server. If you add after folders download, you need to synchronize the account to refresh folder list.

Mail > Accounts > Gmail account > Advanced - Try entering [Gmail] as root.

    No root folder:

    With [Gmail] as root:

I decided to test Mavericks Mail with a new Gmail account today. It seems that all the workarounds we used prior to Mavericks are no longer needed. No root folder required. No prefix [Gmail]/ for folders.

I no longer had to assign folders ["Use this folder for Drafts, Sent, Junk, Trash"]. When I delete a message it actually goes to Trash not to All Mail.

Be sure to check All Mail folder.

Mail created a folder under Archive for my Gmail account:

Unfortunately, none of Diane's suggestions and actions were helpful to me -- least of all the repeated pictures of a bunch of iPhoto radio buttons.

I "fixed" the Mail problem by deleting my Google internet account in "System Preferences," "Internet Accounts" and setting it up again.  Deleting the account in Mail and setting it up again didn't help.

All in all not a very confidence-inspiring set-up, Apple!

UPDATE:  Google mail messages are again missing on my computer -- this time, including those in the inbox. Quitting mail and restarting it is no help.

These are not the images I uploaded. Looks like a problem on the Apple server.
