Q: No Sound through HDMI - Mac Mini

Hello Forum, New user to this forum, I have a problem, I have bought Mac Mini ( August,2010) for home use and recently bought LG -32LD450 - 32". I have connected my TV directly to Mac Mini using a 1.3X HDMI cable. I have video/ display - however no sound. All i can hear is sound from the Mac Mini's internal speaker. I tried to change the setting through - System preference/sound/output. It displays - LG / HDMI - however i cannot select, the setting is active with internal speakers only. Please advise how i can obtain audio from the TV.

I forgot to mention the message seen in System Preference/Sound/Output - LG TV HDMI - Settings for the Selected Device : The Selected Device has no output controls.

In addition to the above, i have tried to check the output controls through Utilities/Audio Midi Setup. Here too i am not in a position to alter HDMI Settings.

Help in this regards is highly appreciated...thanks

Please help

    This worked for me:

    Audio MIDI Setup

click on HDMI in left column - goes blue

hold click to reveal option list and check

    use this for output

    use this for alerts

    good luck!

What a kettle of fish!  I've had a MacMini driving my home entertainment system for years without "any" MAC OS issue raising its nasty head.  Not any more!  Early this week sound ceased through the HDMI to my receiver driving my TV.  I've read every post relating to "HDMI Sound" issues and tried all the solutions without any difference.

My configuration is MacMini to Pioneer Elite Receiver which passes the video to a Pioneer Display.  The sound is outputted to the speakers via the receiver.  All other devices attached, i.e. BD player, Cable Box etc. work just fine. This configuration has been present since day one.  No new hardware only Mac OS X updates (10.9.2).  The MacMini is only used to drive the entertainment system.

Here's a new wringle; when I run the MacMini HDMI out through my Elgato Capture device and MacPro back to the receiver the HDMI sound works just fine. This indicated the source audio is present in the MacMini output signal via HDMI.  I've also wired up the MacPro and it sends sound and audio through the receiver to the TV without problems. The problem is the MacMini HDMI out directly to the receiver and yes same issue is present if it is connected direrctly to the TV - no sound.  I recently updated to 10.9.2 and then my problems started.  It seems this is a "hand shake" issue as related in this Post Topic between the MacMini and my receiver and/or TV as other devices and MacPro work OK - there's sound through the HDMI connection.

Has anyone tried moving back to Mountain Lion to correct this issue?

My 2014 Mac Mini has the same issue with my Samsung TV. It truly is a handshaking issue and the only 'fix' seems to be restarting the MAC. Make sure the TV is on and set to the appropriate HDMI input before you wake up the Mac. This seems to help but is no guarantee.

I have an iMac 2013 and have been having this issue from 10.8 - 10.10, basically same as everyone HDMI output to my LG tv works only after restart and goes away after the mac sleeps, not sleeping it is not an option. Finally I gave up and thought that maybe the hdmi cable was the issue, or the TV was not compatible etc. Then I decided to play around with an Ubuntu live usb, and that thing slept, woke up and everything was still fine, switch the tv to cable and other inputs and went back to the mac and everything still worked.

So now something tells me this isn't hardware! Decided to try bootcamp and install Windows 8.1, everything worked perfect for a couple of days, then my wife switched the input to watch live tv, and then the AMD High Definition audio playback device disappeared from the list of playback options (hdmi video works fine). Couldn't get back the audio device even after rebooting and going back to OSX (the hdmi output worked though), so I tried removing the device from the device manager and refreshing again. And it is working again, somehow the device stopped working and only after reinstalling it back does it start to work, I've tried it several times now and 100% the device would come back and hdmi audio output would resume.

My question now is how do you remove and reinstall a device in OSX to mimic what I've tested on windows 8.1? Right now I'm just happy how well it is working and that I'm able to use xbmc and the pc at the same time.

That worked for me, but is there a way to avoid having to do this each time?

I have a kinivo hdmi switch hooked up to a vizio tv, and a mac mini / apple tv / amazon fire stick are all going into the hdmi swithc.  some times it works fine, and then sometimes the audio just disappears.  turning the tv on and off worked in the most recent instance

FYI I was having this problem today (Feb 2015) with a week-old Mac mini - suddenly no audio over HDMI to my Pioneer receiver.  Based on this thread I flailed around inside MIDI setup for a while and just happened to change the audio from 44KHz to 48KHz and voila - audio was back.  (BTW rebooting everything didn't fix anything for me, only this did the trick.)

I fixed this problem by unplugging everything from the Apple TV, walked around the couch, tthree times, then re-plugging everything back where it was.  And voile'. the sound and the fury...

I fixed this when searching for help for a video issue.

If your using a Samsung TV or Monitor, the solution is very simple and that is you just need to rename the HDMI connection name to PC from your Monitor Setup. You can do it from your Samsung remote controller as following:

    1. Press the "Source" button.
    2. Highlight the HDMI input.
    3. Press "Tools" -> Edit Name -> And then simply using the scrolling (up & down keys on ur remote), select "PC" or "DVI PC" for your HDMI.

If you select DVI PC, you will not get sound through HDMI cable. Select "PC" and you will have both sound & video.

So, this is funny. This posts helped me but I had to do everything in reverse. I realized there were supposed to be some extra settings for my Samsung monitor. I have an old Mac Mini 2009. It has Mini DV output that I used to connect a new Samsung SD590C display with Mini DV to HDMI cable. Just connecting with the cable did not send the sound from the mini to the monitor. Connecting headphones output from mini to audio in on the monitor did not produce any sound as well. I thought there was a problem with my mac, but when I connected that audio cable to an external speaker it was producing sound through that speaker. After reading your posts I found settings menu on my monitor and PC/AV mode was set on PC. I changed it to AV and bingo, I got the sound over the stereo cable. I hope this helps someone who's trying to still use their old mini with new monitors. BTW, connecting my MBP with an HDMI cable I was able to select that monitor in the sound preferences. So this is definitely Mini DV to HDMI issue.
