Q: FCPX 10.1 Very slow on iMac and lots of spinning beach balls

I have noticed since I have started to use FCPX 10.1 on my Late 2012 iMac (32GB RAM, 680MX Graphics, i7 quad core, thunderbold Arecca Raid) I am getting lots of spinning beach balls and things are generally slower.

I am really hoping Apple thought about people who cannot affored a Mac Pro, and ensure the performance is also good on iMacs, but unfortunately I am seeing a drop in performance compared to 10.0.9.

Has anyone else with an iMac noticed this?

EVERYTHING will run "faster" after making a new user. Or reinstalling the entire OS without anything else but a single app, for that matter. I wouldnt suggest that as some kind of "solution" because it really doesnt address the problem of running smooth on a "normal" system confirguration. The fact is, 10.1 is buggy and none of the "trash prefs" etc. "create new user" is offering any real solution when its inherent to the app itself. We've got 2012 MacPro's and CTO Imacs with all of these speed issues that others report. Remember 10.1 is NOT an update of the early version - its more like a FIRST release of a new app in some ways. We've also got great, improved response in speed on several projects simply due to the nature of the updated projects (their simplicity). So its a mixed bag and these complaints are completly valid. We've seen it before - many times. A release is made, some issues solved, and other new ones appear. It's clearly a work in progress (things have obviously been re-evaluated with this new release) just packed with potential, but these issues mentioned are reported over and over again since 10.01. We have ordered a MacPro CTO 12 core 64 mb ram and the full range of topped out offerings. Will be interesting to see how this machine will handle these issues. Hopes are high if you figure in what this machine will cost (delivery in February according to the confirmation.)

So my next question would be, how I can repair my old admin user, so that Final Cut behaves so well as with the new user account?

This comprehensive "user tip" has sections that address your question. Alternatively, you could back up your system drive and then do a clean install.

    Thanks for your advice, Russ.

But to be honest, the problems I have with Mavericks, Photoshop and also Final Cut remembers me to my bad old Microsoft Windows times. I completely changed to Apple because of performance and stability and security. Now I have 10 Apple devices running and get problems everywhere. Also I can not understand that Apple does not distinguish between hobby and pro users who's machnines makes their business go or nogo.

    What I will do now?

Well I simly wait and hope for Apple bringing a working Final Cut version instead of crashing my whole system by experimenting with user permission and that kind of stuff...

I thought Apple MAC OS was made for dummies, not for nerds ?!?

    Very very sad...!

I totally agee glampix. I really am frustrated with this update! I updated a few days ago and have nothing but trouble. Initially render times on old projects were terrible. I created new libraries and this did solve render times but it's still painfully slow just doing normal editing. For example lifting clips from timelines is very slow or just basic trimming etc. I wish I could find a simple fix but I ma reluctant to mess around too much re installing etc as I have a lot of weddings I have filmed for clients and don't want to take any risks at the moment. But yes really bad situation and pretty unacceptable from apple!

Exactly. Agree as well and completely understandable. It's the same with nearly every release bar the last one.

    Same thing for me.

I have a mid 2013 Imac with I7 3,4Ghz and 2GbVram. Up until 2 weeks ago, with FCP 10.0.9 everything was going smoothly. Since upgrading, everything is slower. Rendering is slower. When i try to move the playhead it will take 2-3 seconds each time. Even launching the app is slower. The spinning ball every 2 seconds almost.

I am so frustrated... but apparently i am not the only one.

It reminds me of what a friend of mine told me 5 years ago, when Logic 8 came out and i had just moved from Windows to Mac. He was upset becasue he had paid Logic studio (previous version) more than a 1000 €. Logic 8 was at half that price. But he told me that it was way more processor intensive, and it required many users to upgrade their machine.

He told me: See? this is that they do, they drop the price of software but at the same time they make it way more demanding from the machine perspective so that people need to buy new hardware. this is how they make money.

Not sure he was right. But the fact that FCPX 10.1 and the MacPro came out in the same day makes me think...

Well, I don't think that Apple wants to have video cutting just on MAC Pro, because there are also many users who can work fine with FCPX 10.1. on an iMac. I think this is just a very beta release.

I can hardly try to see something positive - maybe Apple wanted to make 10.1. as a Christmas present, send the update out and the developers left for their Chistmas holidays.

Nobody at Apple could ever imagine that somebody wants to work and finalize paid video projects during that time and during Christmas.

When they come back from their holidays mid of January, they will see tons of similar posts and complaints popping up in their mailboxes.

Not a good experiences for them, and a huge lost of trust in their software...

    Waiting egerly for 10.2. now!

I agree. And i don't think also that they don't want people to stop working on Imacs.

But as i said, when i heard that the new 10.1 and MacPros were coming out the very same day, and having experienced this problems makes me remind of what that friend told me. At the end of the day, their aim is to make money selling mainly hardware, not make the world a better place.

Its the same thing as when Mavericks was released. Mail CRAWLED to a halt and the same people started all this "trash prefs" etc nonsense as the possible problem/cause. Eventually it was updated to the current 10.9.1 which was a basic fix for this issue. It was an inherent fault in the OS - not something users were "doing wrong". Makes you wonder how some things get released when its a glaring error and one asks the question - "wasnt this tested" before it was released. Didnt anyone use the mail app in beta testing? So I wonder with all these beachballs requiring "new user" suggestions etc. why doesnt it "just work" which is the Apple ethos I've always loved.

We have many simple projects that run just great - even with the new version. But when doing more complex cutting than these, those beachballs begin to cause sunburns - they rear their ugly head far too often.

Again FCPX is imo the best editor out there - but its still very much in the "potential" stage when it comes to smooth sailing.

    Hi guys,

    I

I would like to share with you my experience so far after the installation of the new memories.

    Slow performance of FCP 10.1.

I’ve upgraded the memory of my imac from 8Gb to 32gb. (I have an imac 11.1 2009 late, i7, 2.8Ghz, cpu socket 1156, these CPUs are discontinued).

I’ve purchase from Media Mark stores the following memory:

    http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/search/?partid=KVR1333D3S9/8G

I’ve bought 4 pcs of mem 8Gb for only 35,00 euros each, cheaper than the OWC e-shop that sales the 8Gb mem for 45,00 euros (59.90 US Dollars each).

The point is that the imac operates normally the system has recognized the new memories immediately. The best of all is that the FCP is running now faster than the old version 10.0. Seemed that the main reason for the slow performance was only the amount of memory.

    Compressor 4 crashes.

Actually I’m not fan de-installations and re-installations of the applications, since I have gained bad experiences the previous years. I’ve just read the instructions of Compressor troubleshooting step by step http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3894 .

Then I download the ProApps codes of Quicktime from here http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1396 and then magically the compressor operates normally.

    Check them out guys!!!

Just wondering: did you by any chance have a large number of projects and events and updated them all at once into a humongous library? This looks like a strong reason for having slowdowns.

If you have only one large library, try creating a test little library and closing the large one.

I figure that having an extremely large library is tantamount to having all your projects and events on at the same time - and a reason Event Manager X was so useful up to 10.0.9.

The only other explanation I can think of would be a machine-specific bug in either the application or the OS, but if it were the case (like it was in the case of late 2012 iMacs with the high-end GPU) it would likely be widespread, and it does not appear to be.

FWIW, I am finding no slow down in my venerable 2010 MBP, quite the opposite. 10.1 is noticeably faster on it than any of the previous versions.

I like Mavericks just fine but the FCP render times are now 4-10x slower in 10.1.  I'd advise to wait until 10.1.1 is available, otherwise you'll suffer with renders and erratic behavior.

My iMac has 32GB RAM and still got the slow performance issue, but it seemed to be only when I moved the playhead over different compound clips in a project.

I am about to start a new project, so will let you know if I get the same issues with a brand new library.

Have to agree with Aaronlin. There seems to be a routine with the video editing apps from Apple. That is, they seem to always have a slew of quirks with a plethora of speed, crashing, freezing, beachball problems with every release (almost). As I mentioned depending on the project, I wouldnt notice a thing being in the "negative" zone BUT when things get complicated, its definitely for the worse. I wonder why does every release of this app (Motion included) are there all these reported issues when its an app made by the same company making the hardware? When other non Apple apps are updated I dont see the avalance of speed/crash problems ie Photoshop etc as when Apple releases each version of FCPX! You'd think it would just be at LEAST stable! Yes, some (including us in some circumstances) have no issues but this does not mean those who do are hallucinating and it simply shouldnt be this way! You'd think that Apple making both app and hardware would be able to get these kind of CONTINUOUS speed issues in check after so many updates! And without making "new users" "reinstalling the os" reinstalling the this than that" . Come on cant there simply be an update that is simply rock solid by now WITH EVERYONE?
