Q: iMac late 2013 + Mavericks + USB Sennheiser - input freeze

Hi

Since Mavericks i have a problem with my USB Sennheiser Headset.

When i connect it directly to the iMac, every time i start FaceTime or mumble, after 30 seconds? 1 Minute? the microphone get very noisy/scratchy.

After i attached an old USB 2.0 Hub to the iMac and connect the USB Headset to the USB hub, the Microphone is ok.

But after that i had 3 times freeze of all input devices ( usb Mouse, wireless magick mouse, wireless keyboard) in 6 hours.

I need to hard shutdown the system.

Last time i saw this error message in the log.

24.10.13 22:56:03,000kernel[0]vtd[0] fault: device 0:20:0 reason 0x6 R:0x1305000
24.10.13 22:56:03,000kernel[0]USBF:    9437.472    AppleUSBXHCI::UIMCheckForTimeouts - HSE bit set:15 (1)

Someone have some idea?

Thx

René

If you're asking me, I have a 1TB Fusion Drive but this problem has been confirmed on 3TB Fusion systems as well.

Is your iMac still as fast, booting off just the SSD?

Sorry, I haven't gone to the extent of splitting up the Fusion Drive nor do I have any intention of doing so at this point. I've also seen a few reports, as I'm sure you have as well, that even after doing so some report the condition persists.

Sure, its just this fast. Advantages for me are:

    - the ugly bug is gone!!!

    - full control of what is stored on SSD and HDD. Games, movies, music or temp files never needs to be on the SSD for me

    - if one disk is crashing the data on the other disk is still available

    - Bootcamp Windows installed on the SSD

    - you can create more than two partitions

    Disadvantage:

    - you have to be concerned what you want to store on which disk...

    Hi All,

I have been watching and reading all the post related to this issue.

I have a late 2013 with 1T FD and I wanted to thank all the people here, especially Nigel, for all the information sharing,

I wanted to share with you my experience with this issue.

    I had the pops/crackling/noise issue.

had it on ML and Mav, on any audio software, when used Line6 UX1, and Motu MicroBook ii/Audio Express.

it took my some time and effort until I finally realized the problem is with my machine.

the first solution I tried: booting from external HD, did not worked well for me - I still got the pops.

I don't know why, maybe my system was still using the FD somehow.. I did not erase it.

the second solution I tried : splitting the FD worked for me.

I no longer get the pops! there is a nice article how to do it with the Terminal:

    http://www.macworld.com/article/2015664/how-to-split-up-a-fusion-drive.html

Unfortunately, I can not get a refund/fix/replacement from my local authorized seller (iMac was sent to lab and passed all tests), nor a solution,

Apple support help was poor because I am outside of US.

imagine that - spent a nice amount on iMac and interface, and I can get a decent sound.

    really sad.

One more point : I got a few application crashes, it happened twice with Logic Pro X, and once more with another application -  I don't know if it is even related to the issue.

so, my current state is: FD was spitted, I do get a decent sound now, nobody (local authorized seller/Apple)

really helped me, I am crossing my finger and waiting to Apple fix.

    Peace, love and Rock'n'Roll,

    Yo-C

I reported the issue with Apple's support level 2 and I sent them the logs given by their capture_data application.

After almost a week of waiting, they came back to me saying that I was using both the trackpad and the mouse at the same time and that could explain the issue !!!!!!

Hopefully a mac can tolerate input from those two proprietary bluetooth devices!!!

Anyway, within minutes I reproduced the issue (inputs frozen) after having disconnected the mouse.

They seem to have basically ignored all the info I was giving about the relation between the fusion drive and the usage of a USB device.

We'll see where that goes. I just replied to them again.

I had the same issue with my first iMac 2013, fusion drive to.

I could create the freeze without even having an audio interface plugged in.

All i had to do was put the computer to sleep. If i started from computer off it would behave fine.

If i put it to sleep and woke it up, i would have poping in the stock speakers and in the mic.

The poping in the mic was only being heard by my correspondant on skype, or if i recorded a short time in garageband i would hear it on playback.

After hours on the phone with senior advisers their answer was: we don't know, send it back or bring it to the "genius" bar.

Like you, they showed no interest in me offering to tell them how i could reproduce the freeze.

My second replacement had such a bad screen it didn't even make it past the original boot before going back into the box.

I have canceled my order and don't know if i will ever order a new apple product.

My 4 week old iMac with 3 Tb fusion drive is experiencing the same problem. I also updated to Mavericks without trying but my wife has a 2011 iMac running Mavericks and that works fine playing audio through an external USB audio interface.

Personally I think it has something to do with the Fusion drive - sometimes programs won't open and then other times they open really quickly.  This has been the worst Mac I've ever owned and at £2000, I wish I had bought a custom PC set up for music!

The USB2/3 issue where the system (while using USB audio devices) freezes, mouse and keyboard stop responding and a hard reset is required by pressing and holding the power button with errors similar to the following

    kernel[0]: USBF:19215.750AppleUSBXHCI::UIMCheckForTimeouts - HSE bit set:5 (1)

appearing at the moment of the freeze has reportedly been fixed, or at least far improved in the latest 10.9.2 beta.

I have a dev source who also dealt with this, but has not experienced any further problems in over 24 hours of testing.

I'm really looking forward to the official 10.9.2 release.

I have just recently purchased a new late iMac 2013 model, with a 3TB fusion drive, 16gb of ram and have experienced the same symptoms described here with my Blue Yeti 16bit USB microphone. After 30-40 seconds of recording, popping noises develop.

I also have used a DLink USB 2.0 hub for my previous machine (an older 2009 model which had a failing logic board). I attached this DLink USB 2.0 hub to my new machine, and I start getting the input-freezes as mentioned here as well.

It is a serious internal management problem issue when bugs like these appear and cost professionals their time and income. I must say: after having 4 months of trouble with Apple products which were all hardware-related, I have almost lost all faith that this company has any good sense of customer care or understanding of how to properly diagnose and treat serious hardware problems.

True, it is not Apple's job to test every input device on the market to make sure they work with their machines, but if something as simple as an extension of a USB hub or a product that they sell in their stores (that is where I bought the Blue Yeti mic) fails to work with their new hardware and software, then they have a problem with QA. Apple's pride is in the fact they have a closed ecosystem of trusted developers of hardware/software, it is up to them to certify everything works properly.

If the next OS update does not rectify these issues with USB input on late 2013 models, Apple may have lost me as a customer.

I have just installed Mavericks on to a USB drive and now my iMac is playing audio through my Steinberg UR22 perfectly with no stuttering. Not an ideal workaround but it does seem to prove that the problem is coming from my 3Tb fusion drive.

Tested 10.9.2. Beta (13C32) and now  3 1/2 hours without problem. (without beta update it only works for 3-4 minutes)
