Q: mavericks update keychain access not accepting passwords

Every since I updated to mavericks I am gettting these pop ups that are asking for me to enter my keychain access password for all different access. Every time I enter my password it is rejected. I have tried to reset my default password, did not work. Tried keychain first aid did not work. In addition when I look for these keychain passwords for the websites they are not listed in my password keychain I cannot find them to deal with them indiviually. I have lost the ability to use safari, email,even system preferences. everytime I try to use them they freeze up and I am forced to use force quite. Frustrating to say the least. Can anyone point me in the right direction to assist me.

    Steve of Singapore's solution worked for me. I too had the "Local keychain" error. Thank goodness for these forums!

     

    Interestingly I didn't experience the problem until I ran the latest OSX update - the first version of Maverick worked fine. Also, I wonder if the issue has something to do with the iCloud Keychain, as right before it glitched I saved my first password from an iOS device via mobile Safari to the iCloud Keychain. Just a thought.

    hey everyone this is obviously an ongoing problem for lots of users and not just a fluke for one person so dont forget the power of bug reporting directly to apple using https://bugreport.apple.com

     

    if they get enough reports it will likely be addressed much faster than waiting for them to review these forums.

     

    for the record, my situation was a combination of all of the above issues...

    login keychain was not working

    local keychain was not working

    mac login was not working

     

    i reset the mac login using the "?" next to the login field and then followed steve singapore's 9-step instructions and it has worked flawlessly ever since. i reccomend his solution. i am a first time mac user and this left a bad impression but from what i hear it's rare to have such a serious bug in osx. i hope that's true because i was hoping osx would be more stable and reliable than windows.

    Thanks Doximum. This seems to have worked for me.
    None of the other keychain fixes worked.
    I think there's a reason Mavericks was free.

    Thank you Steve Singapore!  The pop ups were driving up the wall.  My other issue that I have is when I'm in iTunes and synced with my iPad or iPhone and I click on the apps it closes the iTunes.  Any help with this or should I start another thread.  Thanks again for the keychain fix.

    Today I returned to my MacMini after the holidays and found that it had found an update to Maverick (10.9 => 10.9.1), which it said needed a restart to install.

    After the restart I had this dialog for the keychain password after I entered my login password and BEFORE I even reached the desktop!

    No matter what I did it kept on cycling through 6 different "Local Items" keychain passwords and never let go. Could not reach the login screen to do anything else either so I had to revert to my Windows machine to search for a solution, which seems to be this thread.

    But the solution (Steve Singapore's) here is depending on doing things in Finder, so I needed to get to the desktop first.

     

    After clicking "Cancel" in this stupid dialog about 100 times or so I finally reached the desktop and could use finder to remove the strange Keychains subfolder and restart.

    And now it does work normally again!

     

    How could Apple have failed to find this before they released the 10.9.1 update?????

    I had this exact problem today. I just purchased a brand new MacBook Pro last night as my current one is very slow now at almost 5 years old. I transferred everything over using Time Machine but then as I was trying to login to the new computer for the first time, it would not accept my password (and I know I was entering it correctly). After being incredibly frustrated I was happy to find this forum!

    I did try booting in safe mode but even in safe mode it prompted me to put my password in so I wasn't getting anywhere.

     

    I ended up calling Apple Support and was plesantly surprised at how little I had to wait to talk to an actual person - only 1 minute if that. She was very helpful and told me these steps:

     

    Completely shut down the computer.

     

    Press and hold the left Option key, then press the power button on the computer. Do not release the option key until you see the picture of the hard drive pop up. 2 hard drive pictures should show up - click on the Recovery one (on the right)

     

    Once it opens in Recovery mode, go to the top menu and click on Utilities. Go to reset password and you can change it in there.

     

    She also told me that I'll need to change the keychain password as well but she is going to email me the directions since my computer is still indexing all the files (as this is the very first time I've accessed it.)

     

    Hope this helps for anyone who can't even get past the initial login screen

    My problem with Maverick and keychain was solved the same week I installed it - AFTER calling a tech from Apple. Took 5 minutes and now solved 95% of the time. But I still have 3 keychains (login.keychain, renamed_1 and renamed_2.  No clue what to do with these last two, but since everything seems to be fine, I simply leave them there. Iif not broken, don't fix. The only problem left on my 27" after Maverick installed is the speed. My BookAir is fine. It takes forever to 'wake up' in the morning or any other time of the day after sleeping for more than 60 minutes. It takes forever (20-45 sec) to see the files in a FINDER folder when searching for an attachment to add to an email.  And no technician can help on this at support. I had 3 coming on my Mac and no luck. Anyone with the speed problem?  solution?

     

    I still come here from time to time and follow this subject with interest. Now I think we owe a glass of champagne to Steve. He did help a lot of people. Cheers!

    This option has not worked for me... I still get this message as well as a bunch of others that are similar Any other ideas? Tried EVERYTHING in this post, no luck for me. Thanks in advance

    Thank you Steve - cyberpint on me  - this has worked for me on my 2011 27 inch Mac, and everything is zipping along a lot faster too - cheers as apple guys said I had to bring it into store which has saved me a heap of time and trouble - thanks again

    Like others, Steve Singapore's solution seems to have worked for me.

     

    I too did not have this issue until the latest Mavericks update.

     

    Good luck to those for whome Steve's solution has not worked.

    I can't even get into my computer, as I log in all the keychain windows appear asking for password, none of mine seem to work so I am stuck on the outside Any ideas?????

    I also had that problem, what I did was to click the cancel button on that stupid dialog time after time. I had to do it maybe a hundred times or so....

    But finally the desktop appeared and I could leave the dialog (which still appeared) hanging there and do the operations outlined by Steve (draggging the offending folder onto the desktop and then restarting).

    After the restart all was well and I could just delete the folder dragged to the desktop.

    Hope it works for you too.

    Thanks BobSwede, I finally went to Genius bar at Local Apple store, they fixed it in 10 min, they did it by going into Terminal to change the password, then they were able to open the desk top and get to finder, then it was all straight forward, so no longer confused
