    Hello

This is just to confirm that TMOBILE CONTRACT FREE PHONES FROM APPLE STORE  are UNLOCKED.
I got this phone to india, setup with nano sim Airtel and it worked out of the box
Apple now sells UNLOCKED sim free phone
If you read the fine line it says the model number is A1533 [which is same as Tmobile one ]
So if you purchase any of these it is unlocked
only tmobile one comes with a nano sim so in brief it just facilitates you to just start with a sim out of the box

However if you buy same from TMOBILE store it is LOCKED to Tmobile for 40 days

    Hope this helps

You did not buy it from an Apple store if it is locked. And there is nothing you can do about other than activate it on T-Mobile, then 40 days later ask them to unlock it.

I've been working a Mobile Device project for my company for the last month and have become more knowledgable about this issue.  We have renewed 1700 devices - over 500 iPhones.  I started with the same question.   Will my iPhone 5 or 5S work on GSM or CDMA carriers?

    From the Apple Store:

We sell AT&T, VERIZON, and UNLOCKED device.   (They lacked more knowledge on the issues - like what is the UNLOCKED Model is unlocked for? GSM? CDMA?  Domestic use?)

    From AT&T:

They gave me the company LINE - Apple devices are UNLOCKED for International use.   They would not comment on Domestic Carriers (Sprint, T-Mobile, or Verizon).

    From VERIZON:

When I asked about unlocking them, the rep explained that the 5 & 5S both come UNLOCKED out of the box.   The 5S model A1533 carries most Frequencies and Bands.   ME341LL/A & ME305LL/A is just the manufacturing number with the only difference being the phone comes pre-loaded with the Carrier's SIM.   His explaination - iPhone 5 or 5S are no longer LOCKED.

So, I did actual test of the models both ways:

A NEW 5 & 5S (Verizon IMEI) accepts the AT&T SIM and works immediately on GSM.

A NEW 5S (AT&T IMEI) is accepted at Verizon and works on CDMA.

I'm not an expert by any means.  But after what I have found, I can't believe the word is NOT out to everyone, that once you buy an iPHONE 5S, you can use it basically on ANY NETWORK.

You are doing a real disservice to all of those people who bought T-Mobile or AT&T locked phones, took them to India or other countries, and found that they did not work and that there was nothing they could do to make them work.

    The REAL answer:

    • A Verizon 5, 5C or 5S will work on any GSM carrier. That is, it's unlocked for GSM. On CDMA it will only work on Verizon. But this is part of an agreement between Verizon and the FCC that allowed Verizon to buy additional frequency bands.
    • In Theory a CDMA phone will work on either CDMA carrier in the US. However, neither Verizon nor Sprint will activate a phone not purchased for their network.
    • An AT&T LOCKED phone (subsidized) will work only on AT&T.
    • A T-Mobile LOCKED phone (subsidized or not) will work only on T-Moblle unless T-Mobile unlocks it.
    • A T-Mobile UNLOCKED phone purchased from Apple will work on any GSM network in the world.
    • A Sprint CDMA phone will work only on Sprint unless Sprint unlocks it.
    • An UNLOCKED phone purchased directly from Apple at full price will work on any GSM network in the world. In theory it can work on CDMA networks also, but only if the carrier supports BYOD.
    • No iPhone 5x will work on LTE bands in all countries, however, as there is no model that supports all LTE bands and different countries are assigned different bands.

That's an outright lie. The CDMA radio is completely disabled in the AT&T iPhones.

With all due respect - I only stated what I tested and found that worked.  I'm not making it up.

I have access to the phones and tried it.   You can think it's BS.  Go ahead.

    1) AT&T active nano-SIM working in a VERIZON phone.

    2) VERIZON activated an AT&T phone.

I read through some of the comments before.   I openned the phones and swapped out cards BEFORE activating on AT&T.  That may not have locked the phone? As I said I am NO expert.  But from talking with the REPs and my testing, I'm happy to provide what I know.

Lawrence - I never said I was an expert.  Or tried to provide false information.

    I test AT&T and VERIZON in the US.   I have T-Mobile phones but I don't have a T-Mobile nano-SIM to validate.

Sprint - I've never tested, and don't expect to anytime soon.  (Seriously do people still use Sprint?)

Mostly all the REPs say the 5x phones are OPEN overseas.

So only question for me is LOCKED or UNLOCKED for carriers in the US.

I don't think any carrier wants a BYOD customer base.

I assume you have test T-mobile devices from what you say.   That's excellent.  Thanks for sharing.

    Bull.

The CDMA radio is supposed to be inactive in all iPhones sold as GSM or unlocked. Even if it were active, Verizon WILL NOT activate it. They can't do so because the MEID # is not in their system. There are some really skeevy 3rd parties to will alter the Verizon database. It wouldn't go all the way to explaining your claim, but it's a start.

The other possibility is that you purchased the AT&T phone at full price, in which case, if you removed the AT&T SIM and inserted another one, it should activate.  Unfortunately, what you apparently didn't bother testing was actually making a call. I could potentially see a Verizon Nano-SIM "working" in an AT&T phone, but you won't be able to make or receive calls at all a they don't go over LTE, they go over the CDMA network which is, of course, disabled.

    Either way, I'm calling shenanigans.

Called, Text, Internet Tested.  (Not speed test but showed LTE on the bar).

Rather than ask you are insinuating.  Pretty rude.

Believe what you will.  You sound like you want to argue.

Have you ever worked with more than 1 iPhone?
