Normally when you "upgrade" it just changes the operating system. Everything else remains. It is always wise to backup your data; in case something goes wrong.

. Is it absolutely necessary to back-up my system before installing Snow Leopard? .
It is both Prudent and Recommended to Backup Before any Major Update or Upgrade.
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
you will NOT LOSE ANYTHING
. Will I lose the content on my computer if I upgrade without backing up? .
No that should not happen... BUT... things can go wrong.
