Q: Why can't I see my media in the left sidebar when using finder?

I recently made the switch to Mac and I have some confusion. When using finder, I am not getting an option to browse through my media such as photos, videos and music. How do I get these folders to appear on my sidebar?

Thankyou.

You don't, they only appear in open file dialogs and in tool panels like in iMovie, iPhoto.

To view your media, you open the app that you use to manage that type of media.

If you open Finder Preferences, select Sidebar, you'll get to check items you want to have visible in your sidebar.

I was assuming you were talking about the media browsers that you get as I described.

If you just want your Movies, Music, and Pictures folders in the Sidebar, rbhix provided the answer.

I found that I too had this problem of not being able to find the users, photos, music, etc.  I share a Macbook with my wife with our own user set up on it.  I went into system preferences, then to sharing, and checked the boxes for files, screen.  I then went into my finder preference section and changed my "New finder window show" to my computer's name.  At that point I could view and find anything within it.  Hope this helps.

The Sharing services you turned on have nothing to do with it.

What you did doesn't show the Media Browser. It just shows the folders where your media is stored. You may be correct that was all that cobacc wanted.

The Media Browser shows the actual media in thumbnails so that you can preview the media.

However, neither requires any Sharing services to be enabled.

once you show the folders, then you can simply drag and drop the one's that you want to the left in the bar to be easily accessible for future use.

I'm not talking about folders, regardless of where they exist or where you want to access them from.

    I1m getting desperate...

In my case, I will say that no photos show up anywhere except in the Photos app itself.

I cannot attach a photo to an e-mail (using the Apple Mail App), I can't upload a photo to Facebook... Quite annoying.

The Finder-browser that appears when I want to navigate to a photo only shows the photo library, so (if I have the time), I can attach the whole library (database).

... and of course, the mac has been restarted numerous times, and this problem has been there ever since the transition from iPhoto to Photos.

(For the sake of good order: I can drag and drop a pic from the Photos app to Mail, but this is cumbersome on a small screen. I can not in any way upload a photo through Safari without first exporting it to the desktop or somewhere).

Any of you smart people have a suggestion?
