Q: iCloud storage problem

I'm getting messages saying my iCloud storage is almost full.

So I went System Prefs > iCloud  and it says I have 208.8 MB of 5 GB available.

But over 2 Gb of what I've used is Mail.

So I opened Mail on my Mac, selected a load of old email messages, (many with big attachments), and moved them to the trash. I then opened trash selected them again and hit the delete key, then I went Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items > In all accounts.

So they should be pretty well deleted!

I then went System Prefs > iCloud, and nothing has changed; I still have 208.8 MB available.

I went back into Mail, deleted a load of Sent messages (many with big attachments) and did the same.

Then I deleted some Junk mail (there wasn't much).

Then I opened Safari, went to www.iCloud.com - opened my Mail account and did the same again.

SO after all this I still have 208.8MB of storage available.

Can someone explain how I free up some space by reducing Mail stoirage please?

Thanks,

Paul

What does any of that have to do with this issue (which, in case you forgot, is Mail storage) not backups, not texts and certainly not photos.

Photos and Music do not affect your iCloud storage at all. Do some research, start a study group, there are others here who can join it!

    Ahem...

I really appreciate the input everyone, but getting back to the thread...

One big lump of immovable email backup on the cloud. 2.1 gb of it, which doesn't seem to reduce, or even change, even though I have deleted all my emails!

Several sensible suggestions already, which haven't worked... Any further ideas about how to solve this would be greatly appreciated!!

Csound do not be very hardhead, everything is saved on ur device icloud backing up and saved in the icloud storage, go to icloud settings and you can see something like that all options are ON you can see that, means everything from ur device will be save and back up to icloudphoto.PNG

"You can believe whatever you want. We're done."

The problem is that you're wrong and you keep insisting that you are right and you are giving bad advice here. Personally, I just think you are misreading this thread or do not understand iCloud backups.

Before you said it was your email, now it's a backup.

Which is it, email, or backup?

Neither iCloud or Gmail are email clients, and OP is using Mail as the client and iCloud is his service provider.

iCloud only handles iCloud Mail. Not Gmail or any other system.

Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, none of these are stored in iCloud. Only iCloud Mail is stored there. Just like there is no iCloud mail storage at Hotmail or Gmail. They all store their own products

Have you tried either of these solutions:

    1) Try moving your messages to your computer to free up iCloud space...

Moving your messages from iCloud to your computer can be useful when your iCloud mailbox is full or you want to reduce the amount of iCloud storage you're using.

    Moving selected messages

Follow these steps to move messages from iCloud and store them on your computer instead.

In OS X Mail, choose Mailbox > New Mailbox.

Select On My Mac from the Location menu, enter a name for the new mailbox, and click OK.

Select your iCloud inbox from the list of mailboxes in the sidebar, then select the messages to move.

Drag the messages to the new mailbox, or choose Message > Move To > the new mailbox.

    2) or Try deleting your messages to free up iCoud space...

Follow these steps to permanently delete messages from iCloud without keeping a copy on your computer.

Select the iCloud messages to delete, then choose Edit > Delete. The messages are moved to your Trash folder in iCloud.

Choose Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items to permanently delete the messages in the Trash folder.

    Here’s what iCloud backs up:

    • Purchased history for music, movies, TV shows, apps, and booksYour iCloud backup includes information about the content you have purchased, but not the purchased content itself. When you restore from an iCloud backup, your purchased content is automatically downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBooks Store. Automatic downloading is based on iTunes in the Cloud availability by country, and previous purchases may be unavailable if they have been refunded or are no longer available in the store.
    • Photos and videos in your Camera Roll
    • Device settings
    • App data
    • Home screen and app organization
    • iMessage, text (SMS), and MMS messages
    • Ringtones
    • Visual Voicemail

And here is what it does NOT backup.

Your iOS device backup only includes data and settings stored on your device. It does not include data already stored in iCloud, for example contacts, calendars, bookmarks, mail messages, notes, shared photo streams, My Photo Stream, and documents you save in iCloud using iOS apps and Mac apps.

Notice that Photo Streams, Music, Mail and Documents, (plus a lot of other things) are excluded

I'm going to suggest that you start a new thread away from all this noise.

Please be clear whether or not you are referring to the 2.1GB email store or the 2.6GB backup store, for the benefit of clarity.
