Q: how can you import samples into the virtual keyboard in garageband?

hey in an older version of garageband i was able to chop up samples and place them into the virtual instrument keyboard but in the new garageband i don't know how to do that, or if its possible.

It is still working just like before. Only you have to have the extra content - did you already download the extra sounds? If you previously bought GarageBand and the JamPacks you should be able to download it again using the menu "GarageBand > Restore Purchase". Then you should see your old instruments in the Library Browser in the "Legacy" section:

Legacy > GarageBand > Sound Effects

Create a software instrument track set to one of the SounEffects Instruments and drag the your samples from a real instrument track onto different keys of the Musical Typing keyboard. Save the instrument with a new name.

Do you have the Legacy instrument section at all? HAve you tried, if something will be restored, when you use the "restore Purchase" menu?

I bought the most recent pack and I dont have sound effects. When I go under legacy and garageband I dont have even half of the instruments your picture shows. Is there some specific way I have to access sound effects or is it under some other pack?

    calebn116,

the sound effect instrument was part of the regular set of instruments, that came with GarageBand.  Check, if it is still in your Instruments Library - if you still have the Sound Effects Instrument installed:

Select your system drive in the Finder and follow this path - open the folder "Library", then "Application Support", etc ...

    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Track Settings/Software/Sound Effects/

Do you still have any Sound Effect instruments at all? If not, check your Time Machine backup, if they are still there and restore them to the folder

    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Track Settings/Software/Sound Effects/

It doesn't matter because this doesn't work. It never mattered what sound you had, whether you could assign loops to MIDI keys. This guy is sending you on a goose chase. I have the sound and it doesn't work. If you need proof I can screencap and post a video.

Then you have no longer any software instruments from GarageBand '11 installed.have you made a clean-install, when you upgraded to Mavericks and uninstalled GargeBand '11?

Does any of your family or other member of your household have a mac with GB '11 or an old iLife'11 install CD, so you could borrow the GB '11 instrument library?

    /Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Track Settings/Software/Sound Effects/
