Q: OCSP Service using up quite a bit of bandwidth

I have been tracking down an issue regarding our ISP bandwidth usage (very high).

I believe I have found an issue with the OCSP daemon (ocspd) using up quite a bit of bandwidth for no apparent reason - my initial tests seem to show that this daemon, under Mavericks, is using about 100MB of download bandwidth per day (approx 3GB per month).  This is huge considering that this process is meant to cache retrieved results (assuming of course it is getting results).

As a further test, I had 2 Macs running Mavericks and 1 running ML overnight, with all machines running RubberNet to monitor per process bandwidth.

On both Mav machines, the ocspd daemon used up the traffic as per above but ML used no bandiwdth for the same process.

The implications here is that users with bandwidth limited connections (e.g. Satallite or Mobile) will use up much of their allowance when at idle hence my interest.

Can someone verify these findings?

Just a wild thought: Perhaps because the keychain is now sent to iCloud in Mav, I wonder if the certificates are being checked more often for security reasons.

Thanks

Emlyn

This maybe a coincidence but I also had a big mysterious 10s of gigs download before this whole  ocspd daily download problem was noticed. I also thought it was wifi and changed my wifi password.  If anyone else has had and big mysterious downloads and has ocsp and crl on it might indicate less of a coincidence!?!?

I not sure if you guys found the solution or not but i had to go back to Mountain Lion for the time beeing. Mavericks was making me spend extra for more data and i already have a 60 gig plan that i never busted before Mavericks.

Can you confirm if theres a solutionother then turning off ocsp wich did not work for me.

    Thanks

As someone earlier determined you only need to turn off the CRL. The OCSP didn't seem to be part of the issue..... maybe it was earlier and thus how 'OCSP ' got into the thread title.

I haven't looked at my usage since my last post but i'll check again when I get into work in a couple of hours.

    Cheers Steve

Guys - This has been fixed.  Don't know if it was the update for 10.9.1 (don't think so), or if something was fixed on Apple's end (think this is what happened), but everybody, myself included, have gone back to:

    OCSP: Best Attempt

    CRL: Best Attempt

    Priority: OCSP

Haven't had any issues.  The one issue I had I'm thinking was somebody hacking into my wifi.  Haven't had any anomalies since.

    Cheers,

    Brad

Definitely fixed for me on Dec 22nd.  Four machines here have been behaving fine since then and I've upgraded two more over the Christmas period and they've been fine too.

Just to add to the confidence level that this problem has been fixed, my broadband usage has been normal for the past two weeks. I wonder how many people were hit by this problem but either had unlimited broadband allowances or simply assumed that they had inadvertently exceeded their allowance and paid up any charges. I also wonder when Apple were first aware of the problem and why, when this was costing users a lot of money, they couldn't issue some sort of warning.

This issue just showed up on my 15" MacBook Pro running OS 10.9.2 so I think it's safe to say that it has still not been resolved by Apple. I'm on satellite Internet with a daily download limit of 250 MB so, needless to say, this does not make me happy. I also have a Mac Pro running Mountain Lion and have not had any problems with it.

My MacBook Air running mavericks just started eating data like it was gold in the past few months.  Has anyone noticed an issue with the mail and this problem.  My mail showing mail activity of hundreds of thousands of mail activity and it keeps running but no mail being put in or sent from my mail.  Could this mail activity problem be eating the data because it runs in the background?   I have disabled the mail to see if that will help.

Strange you should mention this, just reached your posting, very similar here. thinking it may have something to do with internet speeds and time limits on access to activities?

    OCSPD downloads - seem continuous

as I'm new to apple and hadn't found this thread.

I was able to narrow it down to System Preferences > iCloud > Photos > My Photo Stream. Turning this off prevents OCSPD from continuously downloading. Could be caused by other issues, but this solved it for me.

Thanks clockworkapps for the heads up on the OCSP & CRL option!
