Have ou updated GarageBand to version 10.0.1 after upgrading to Mavericks?
If not, sign into the AppStore, sign into your account, and search for GarageBand on main AppStore page. It should show GarageBand ready to be purchsed for free. GarageBand 10.0.1 does not show as an update, but as a purchase to be bought for free.
You add Drum Track from the "Track > New Track" menu entry.
The window should look like this:

I checked the garage band help it shows garage band '11 help. I downloaded garage band in mountain lion before deciding to change to mavericks. The version shows 6.05 but looks like an older version.

Have fun with GarageBand.
Just a caution - I forgot.
When you download and install GarageBand 10.0 to get the drummers and Arpeggiators, don't uninstall the older GarageBand '11. It will be difficult to restore it, if you prefer the older version, and many have regretted to have deleted GB '11, because the new version does not support all features that GB '11 had. So keep it, until you are sure, which version you prefer. You can use both versions in parallel.
Happy New Year
